WTF?

Truth, the anti-smoking campaign that has been around for some years, unleashed a new fury of misinformed advertisements titled “WHUDAFXUP?” The new series of commercials stick with the agenda of educating children and parents on the dangers of cigarettes and the misdeeds of the companie
s produce them. The original series of Truth highlighted important statistics and facts, and then presented them in such a way as to make the viewer think “whoa.” However, the creators of “WHUDAFXUP?” seemed to have stretched themselves a little too far in an attempt to find new ways to convince the public of the hazards of big tobacco companies and their products.

The “WHUDAFXUP?” campaign focuses on decades-old marketing and research documents obtained from big tobacco companies. The creators pick out specific facts that they can easily manipulate on-screen with unlikely scenarios performed by the “WHUDAFXUP?” spokesperson, Derrick.

The latest commercial (and by far the most misinformed) starts by saying that big tobacco companies create fun, fruity cigarette flavors, while insisting that they are not marketing to children. To “prove” his point, Derrick goes to a park and sets up a brightly painted lemonade-type stand with words like “Mocha Taboo” and “Midnight Berry.” It’s no surprise when several children, and no adults, approach him.

The most misleading piece of information offered by Truth and “WHUDAFXUP?” makes viewers think that big tobacco companies massively advertise to children. How is that possible when tobacco is prohibited from being advertised on television, possibly the biggest source of information for children? In addition, tobacco ads are rarely seen on billboards or on the Internet. The only sources left for big tobacco are magazines, and there is no way a children’s magazine would allow tobacco ads to grace its pages. So just how are children finding out about fun, fruit-flavored cigarettes? WHUDAFXUP.

It's an experiment in behavior control that worked because they know they can link anything to fear around the body and make you do anything. Yuppies were great fodder because their bodies are part of their "specialness" syndrome and not smoking was positioned as a class-wedge (gugh, she smokes!). Granted, if you puff every puff with resentment or repression or anger over something instead of enjoying your moment alone with God (which the governments DO want to take away), THAT might kill you.

Smoking causes health problems. Period.

"idea" said early to watch TV for an hour and see how many characters smoked. I saw about, none. None at all. I even changed through channels every ten minutes and looked for the most likely candidates. I have not seen any TV show with excessive smoking that doesn't end with a "lesson".

Excellent article. It is all too true.Governments all over the world are rushing around slapping pictures of diseased lungs on packs of smokes along with warnings that smoking kills. Furthermore they force tobacco companies to fund these ill-informed anti-smoking campaigns that only reinforce to kids that smoking is bad and therefore perfect to rebel with. Meanwhile governments run around charging insane amounts of taxes on tobacco products scooping up billions a year in tax revenue off of smokers who they apparently are trying to convince to quit. People KNOW smoking is harmful and increases health risks, but people also know fast food is bad for you and alcohol kills; yet people over-indulge all the time. Why isn't fast food taxed heavily, how about booze? Governments are using the fight against smokers to slowly push laws and control on society while collecting huge paydays while keeping tobacco legal. Anti-smoking campaigns are a way to publicize smoking more, get kids and teens to

anyone who thinks smoking doesnt cause, or increase the risk for, multiple types of cancer is an idiot and should probably just kill themselves to keep their genes from polluting the rest of the world...also milk and cigarettes? are u seriously that stupid...the only "bad" thing milk contains is possible allergens from their all plant diet....and tobacco industries HAVE to fund these groups but it doesnt mean they want too...also our government doesnt really "allow" nicotine they dont really control it in the first place, contrary to popular and misinformed belief the government, as stated by the constituiton and bill of rights, can not overly interfere in publicly controlled business, thats the job of communist governments..i hope some of you will watch t.v. for just an hour and see how many times a main character smokes and then you can come talk about tobacco not advertising on t.v...aftre that you can leave your houses for the first time and actually do something instead of just co

Hahahahha there have been studies that show cell phones are 2X as likely to cause cancer as smoking ciggerettes. So why arent people going after the cell phone companies? if you actually read the studies about smoking causing cancer...... your full of b.s. there arent any. the studies state that it blocks vitimin C from entering the system, therefore make the body more susecptable to getting cancer. If smokuing was as bad as they try to make it sound would the govt not have to take it off the market for the saftey of the people... oops wait I forgot about the US govt and how its ran by lil hitler....Bush and how he is slowly taking away the rights of the citizens of this country and how he attacks other countries that the U.N cant even find a treason for attacking

Megan: Just the other day Ronald McDonald walked right up to me and shoved a Big Mac right into my mouth and down my throat. It was ridiculous, and then he made me pay for it! And just as that carcinogenic, trans-fat filled, greasy pile of cow-flesh was just getting to work on my digestive track, a big-tobacco exec walked up and shoved a bunch of lit cigarettes in my mouth, and then held my nose so that I'd have to inhale them. So there goes my lungs too! Man... I wish the government would get involved. You'd think this would all be a crime or something.

some people on here are really ignorant. indians have been smoking for over 4,000 years!! its all the additives and shit that mainstream cigarette companies put into their cigarettes that really is terrible. you can buy organic tobacco and paper that is made out of flax or hemp. as for the cigarette companies having to give money for anti-smoking campaigns yes that is true but they do not really get to direct where the money is going to be used. why don't you ignorant people go for an afternoon jog in LA.

Good article. The WHUDAFXUP? campains focus on tabacco companies using propaganda to manipulate and brainwash while they do the exact same thing. Their web site is the most rediculous misleading load of crap i have ever seen in my life. It is one thing to state facts like nicotine is addictive, or cigarettes increase the chance of lung cancer, but some of the information they rant about seems to be pulled straight out of their asses. I wish douchie liberal tool bags would stop trying to impose thier personal moral beliefs on the rest of the world. And Megan, people have been smoking for thousands of years, and two 16oz glasses of whole milk contain more calories, fat, and cholesterol than a king size snickers bar.

Question? Is it not the Government who regulates and controls cigarettes? QUESTION? Is not nicotine an additive that is put into cigarettes that is controlled by BIG BROTHER? QUESTION? Should we not be questioning our Government for allowing "themselves" to allow an addictive additive into our cigarettes to begin with? QUESTION? Should we not be grabbing the bull (Government ) by it's horns for allowing all this, aS THEY pretend that they are concerned yet do nothing about it? It';s not the tabacco companys thats the problem it's the "REGULATERS" GET IT RIGHT!!! LAST QUESTION??? WHY DOES OUR GOVERNMENT ALLOW AN ADDICTIVE ADDITIVE (NICOTINE).
