On the other hand, if you discover that the good outweighs the bad you might want to re-evaluate your role in the friendship. Is there something you're doing or not doing that is causing you to feel that your friend is toxic when in fact it's you who are the toxic one? Be careful with this one though, toxic friends are notorious for trying to make you feel guilty and label you as the bad guy or gal.
Why make a list?
Making a list provides you with personal confirmation. Put your feelings in writing and whenever you find yourself on a guilt trip about whether or not to end your toxic friendship, take out your list and remind yourself of the many reasons why you need to get the toxic person out of your life. Once you read all that negative stuff, you'll receive an immediate reality check!
I compiled my list a couple of years ago on one of those tumultuous days of my toxic friendship. I selected 41 things because I was 41 years old at the time. My initial list could have very easily consisted of at least 100 negative things. Anyway, I wrote it on one of those days when I had gotten completely fed up with the antics of my former toxic friend. She had literally gotten on my last nerves so I compiled this list as a form of self therapy, sort of a mental release for myself and as a plea for her to take a look at the negative impact her behaviors were having on our so-called friendship. Of course she never did understand the importance of my list of likes and dislikes.
