Along the sloping edges of Siler City and the oblique lines of Pittsboro, NC creeps a mystery as unsolved as crop circles.. The Devil's Tramping Ground is a 40 X 40 foot sterile, stomped parcel of land in Western Chatham County that animals and insects avoid. Some say that when you stand directly in the round patch of bare earth, that you can feel a current of wind that is different from the atmosphere outside the ring. More than a local haunt, this area called the Devil's Tramping Ground is evaded and skirted by hunters. Gossip from the residents proclaims the dogs of the huntsman tuck their tails and bolt when they border this property. Local legend echoes a belief, a humble fear, that the devil paces and plots his despicable deeds in this desolate, dead-looking circle.

The legend alleges that if you place an object like a rock or piece of paper in the circular, evil hangout, it will either be cast aside or will vanish by morning. I am unaware of anyone who has either seen a diablo, or witnessed an item as it disappeared or moved.

A paranormal group based in Raleigh, NC called NC HAGS Paranormal Observers visited this haunt with cameras and video equipment. The video was interesting as well as the still photographs. For some, it will be controversial, but the footage is certainly worth a look. The video is available through YouTube or by going to www.fridayhope.com.. For the fascinated, NC HAGS has a website, www.nchags.org. Part of the site is still under construction. The information about the Devil's Tramping Grounds appears to be complete. You be the judge, but perhaps, for a few it will lend some credibility to the North Carolina haunted site.
