Brett Hanover's new feature length film, The Bridge, has raised a few eyebrows on Internet discussion groups. Debuting in Stavanger, Norway, home of Scientology critic Andreas Heldal-Lund operator of the website http://www.xenu.net, during the 10 year anniversary celebration of Heldal-Lund's website the film was immediately released to the public via Google and XenuTV.

Audience reactions are mixed. Current members of the controversial Church of Scientology, considered by some to be a cult, and some ex-members fault the film based on technical inaccuracies of various procedures practiced by the church. While other ex-members and many non-members look past the small discrepancies and find the over all meaning of the film.

The film, shot over a period of five days with a tight budget, gives the non-initiate food for thought about this controversial group. The dual plot line follows the stories of Diana Wheat, played by first time actress Carole Smith, and Amy Grey (Diana Heaton) and their struggles with the group.

In stark contrast to the satirical approach of the American television show South Park, Hanover gives us a serious look at real policies the Church of Scientology about which the church is often criticized. Isolation, the church's official disconnection policy, and the arguably manipulative techniques the group uses to keep members from leaving the church.

Conversely, he also shows how some critics and protesters, as well meaning as they may be, have an unintended effect on individual members that encourage them to stay in the cult.

Despite the technical inaccuracies, many ex-scientologists and non-scientologists are impressed by the film. With some ex-scientologists commenting that the film does not come close to showing how bad it actually is inside of the Church of Scientology.

Church officials could not be contacted for comment.

Shawn, you haven't seen the fiim yet but still post? And a scientology link to boot. But lets talk about the action involved. Did you know these people were told to leave the area by the police and fire department and sneaked back in? Are you aware that they tried to divert trauma victim's from the people who were trained to help them? These people you think so highly of should have been arrested on the spot. They will lie, cheat and let people die in order to get their message across. Shame on you first for not seeing the very flim this is about. Shame on you twice for being a silly member of scientology trying to put one over everyone here. When are you guys every going to learn we are not stupid? Funny but I get the feeling you didn't see the flim because you were NOT ALOUD TO see it.

Hi shawn. No it doesn't poke fun. In fact, at times the movie provokes sympathy for the main charactor, a scientologist, by the way she is treated by non-scientologists.

I am surprised that there are only two negative comments. I am interested in hearing more negative comments.

I wonder how many members of CoS have had a loved one missing or mudered by a criminal? Criminal Psychiatry WORKS! Profilers know what they are doing, if it was a pseudo-science... it wouldn't work. If Tom Cruise's baby Suri wen't missing who do you think he'd ask for help to find her? Cops schooled in Psycology/Psychitary know what they are doing. Not to mention the places that educated them. I wonder if Tom will diss Brooke again, now that she's playing a shrink on Nip/Tuck?

I have been reading many comments on this movie. There is nothing better I would like to do than to see it, but it was created on a very low budget(that didn't stop it from being a great film, from what I've heard other say) and needs closed-captioning before I am able to see it. I really hope that the movie catches on with a wider audience and that a wider distribution will send some funding towards this very brave film maker...in hopes that captioning can be added some day soon. I also hope that more people will take a look at Scientology because of this movie and see how dangerous it is, hopefully to keep people out of it, and avoid the heartbreak that so many others have already done through. I've never been a part of Scientology but because I have spoken out against them, they have also targeted me and try to do harm to me and my businesses. It's amazing when you become a target just for speaking your mind.

In the words of Scientology VWD - Very Well Done! And thank you. I intend to "disseminate" this broadly.

The two things that shocked me most were that the new clear had to give back her bracelet and the sec(urity) check. I have read a lot about CofS, but still it was schocking to see. The disconnection of the father was heartbreaking and criminal! And it all is what the real life in CofS is about! Ex-members told me that it was an accurate picture that the film showes. Good job, well done!

Hi Fair, You say scientology helps people and the members are happy. May I ask what you base this statement on? Why not look at both sides of this issue, Try scientology.com, xenu.net and xenutv.com

I saw that film and found it very emotional, which was probably the effect researched on the potential public. Some say it has "technical inaccuracies" - this is of no importance: scientology is not a science, and has lots of inaccuracies, so, even some "shortenings" of its techninques won't change the ideas behind the film, that is, the film shows that scientology uses bizarre methods to empriosn minds, and uses strength and menaces against its detractors, rather than really changing its unscrupulous lies anc crime-generating rules.

Nice artical and Editorial Sparky. Whether or not some 'technical details' are inaccurate is just semantics when considering the overall subject matter of the 'Church' of scientology. A more dark and insidious institution created in the last 50 years Ive yet to see. Hopefully Bretts Film may trigger a bigger Budget Film through his work at showing inside the belly of the Monster named Scientology. Great Film Brett and nice Editorial Sparky. KUDOS!
