The Plot
The shopaholic, Rebecca Bloomwood, will take you on a journey about working for a financial magazine, called "Successful Savings". Becky recently graduated from college and started working at "Successful Savings" right away. Even though she knew about financial matters, Becky was still in debt from charging the money on her credit cards. Becky received letters stating her payment is late, and has done things like thrown them away or claim to not see them. Becky has used every excuse from her dog's death to getting a broken leg. Because Becky is a journalist, she gets to go to conferences and other events for financial companies. She meets interesting people, including a person who works for the tabloids. Becky does not know how she will get out of debt, or even how she will pay part of the payment, until she discovers that a financial insurance company has done something wrong to loyal customers. I will not give away the rest of the story, but you should read it for yourself.
My Review
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. Sophie Kinsella uses a unique way of telling the story by letting the readers see the main character, Rebecca Bloomwood's letters from the credit card companies and the other people she meets. It is almost like a piece of evidence to solving a problem, but she is not. Bloomwood is trying to figure out how to get her life together. Kinsella's interesting way to tell a story is persistent throughout the novel. Not only do we learn about Rebecca's life, we learn about what it takes to be a journalist. We also learn about the responsibilities and challenges of the financial business. The happy ending, however, was not my favorite, and it could have been better.
