Though it has long been known that exercising regularly helps diabetics, it wasn’t known in how many ways, or by what mechanisms diabetes is controlled by exercise. Recent studies and different research teams have brought additional data that shows that there are at least 7 different ways by which exercise helps diabetics control diabetes. Exercise will not only help you face up to diabetes, but will also help you live a healthier and longer life in general.
Without any further ado, here are the 7 ways that exercise helps overcome diabetes:
1. Type II diabetes causes what is known as insulin insensitivity, or insulin resistance. Exercise helps overcome this by increasing your insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. This means that your body will be able to make use of insulin more efficiently and control blood glucose level. Consider what would happen if you weren’t aware of one of your arms. You would not be able to do as much as you normally could simply because you didn’t know that you had another arm! That’s what insulin resistance does as well. Your body doesn’t make good use of it, because your body is insensitive to it.
2. Diabetics are at a greater risk of cardio-vascular problems as well. Exercise helps overcome this too by lowering triglyceride, LDL (bad cholesterol) and increasing good cholesterol (HDL). This promotes better cardio-vascular health.
3Another threat that diabetics face from diabetes is that of high blood pressure. Exercising can reduce both your resting blood pressure and your blood pressure during physical stress (such as working out). This is essential in reducing your risk for heart attack or stroke. In most people exercise plays a very vital role in lowering blood pressure and is sometimes even sufficient without the need of any drugs or medication.
