In a world of high-speed, fast-paced, instant gratification, music lovers have the ability to choose from many different kinds of musical styles, genres, and delivery formats. For as long as I can remember, I have always loved country music. The marriage of a plain and simple lyric with a country melody is sweet music to my ears. Why do people love country music? Why is country music so special?

Country music is plain and simple. The melodies are gentle and music to the ears. Every song tells a different story. Country music contains lessons that everyday people can relate to. As a matter of fact, Martina McBride had a number one hit in 1994 with, "Independence Day." The song brought the seriousness of domestic violence to the forefront. As a result, the critical problem of domestic violence was discussed openly in a brand new way. This gave audiences a new perspective on an existing social problem which needed our time, resources, and attention.

Country music brings people of all ages, cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs together. People ranging in age from elderly grandparents to young children can enjoy country music. Country music is a musical format that the entire family can enjoy! Many adults love playing country music during family trips. Families can trust that their children will not be poorly influenced simply by listening to country songs on the radio. Country music addresses real-life situations. This objective is achieved in a very respectful way, without making any use of profane language, negative cultural stereotypes, or lyrics that could be considered sexually explicit by some audiences and standards.

As a Southern woman, country music is the only genre of music that offers songs about situations that I have faced in my life. One of my favorite songs is, "Angels Among Us," by Alabama. The uplifting message of the song is simple. No matter how challenging our lives are, someone who cares for us will be there for us in our time of need. My disability has given me the unique blessing of being cared for by a wonderful support system. My loved ones are as kind and loving as the angels that Alabama sings about.
