Smoking cigarettes has been quite a longstanding habit since its widespread popularity in the 1880s. The American Cancer Society's (ACS) website provides information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), estimating that 44.5 million American Adults were active smokers in 2006. Those figures account for 20.8% of all U.S. adults, or roughly 1 in 5 people.

(ACS) states that 30% of all cancer related deaths are due to smoking, and that 87% of lung cancer deaths are a result of smoking. Every year over 400,000 people in America lose their lives to illnesses resulting from smoking. Cancer itself is not the only threat, for it only claims about half of the lives taken by way of smoking. Smokers must also dodge the likes of aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, heart decease, and stroke.

Woman of childbearing age should be especially careful, as smoking reduces fertility and increases the risk of miscarriage according to (ACS). Tobacco use has also been linked to sudden infant death syndrome. Based on the data that the (CDC) collected between 1995 through 1999, it is estimated that the average male smoker loses 13.2 years of life and the average female smoker loses 14.5 years of life.

According to (ACS) there have been over 4,000 individual chemicals identified in tobacco and tobacco smoke, 60 of which are known carcinogens (cancer causing agents). Some of the chemicals that can be found in tobacco products are ammonia, benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and nicotine. A cigarette is an absolutely deadly cocktail of chemical bliss and certifiable health problems.

(ACS) has not found any evidence that smoking all-natural or herbal cigarettes is any less of a threat to your health than conventional cigarettes. All-natural cigarettes contain carcinogens and other toxins, and herbal cigarettes still supply you with ample amounts of carbon monoxide and tar. There simply is no such thing as a safe cigarette, at least not in this day and age.
