2008 Oscar Wrap-Up, Results and Winners

"No Country for Old Men," "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Once" Are Winners at the 80th Annual Academy Awards

Though everyone has gone back to work, the aftereffects of the Writer's Guild of America Strike were painfully evident during the 80th Annual Academy Awards broadcast on Sunday, February 24. Host Jon Stewart opened the show with an acknowledgement about the end

2008 Oscar Winners, Results and Wrap-Up: There's Gold for "Old Men"

Though "Atonement" and "Michael Clayton" looked as if they might walk away with lots of gold, Joel and Ethan Coen were the night's big winners for "No Country for Old Men." The Coen Brothers won for Best Adapted Screenplay and Achievement in Directing. "No Country for Old Men" also earned the Best Picture Oscar and Javier Bardem picked up the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.

"The Bourne Ultimatum" picked up a surprising three Oscars, but the big upset of the night was "Falling Slowly," a song from the film "Once," winning Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures. The family film "Enchanted" had three nominated songs in that category.

Though he has hosted the Academy Awards in the past, John Stewart seemed as if he were struggling to improvise material, a task that frequent Oscar host Billy Crystal always handled with ease. Still, Stewart had a few memorable lines:

On the violent, depressing nature of many nominated films: "Does this town need a hug?" "Thank God for teen pregnancy."

On Eddie Murphy's "Norbit" earning an Oscar nomination for Achievement in Makeup: "Too often the Academy ignores films that are not good."

After the visibly pregnant Cate Blanchett and Jessica Alba presented awards, Stewart said "Two pregnant women at the Oscars. The night is still young and Jack (Nicholson) is here. Perhaps we'll re-tally at the end of the night."

I spent Oscar night in Disneyland, first time in my life I was ever okay with missing the Oscars. Thanks for the recap, it's nice to hear someone actually talking about nominated films instead of what people were wearing. I hate that junk entertainment tv coverage.
