Every year at Easter, thousands of children are given rabbits as gifts. Every year, a few weeks later, those rabbits are either handed over to animal shelters or mistreated so badly that they die. A lot of problems people have with rabbits are because they are bored. A bored rabbit becomes destructive. It chews, it bites, it destroys. People get upset and, Bye Bye Bunny. To make sure your rabbit doesn't have a chance to get bored, make sure him or her has lots of toys. Rabbits love to play and chew, so they're in seventh heaven with rabbit toys. Rabbit toys don't have to cost an arm and your left leg, they can be simple and inexpensive. A cheap toy will still give your rabbit hours of enjoyment. Here are a few ideas for rabbit toys that will keep your rabbit happy and, most importantly, non-destructive.

1. Old books. Rabbits love to chew and they love chewing paper. They also love ripping books apart. So, to make sure they don't destroy your first edition Jane Eyre, give them old books of their own. Any old book will do. Just put it on the floor next to them and they'll go at it, happily ripping it apart for hours. The only thing to be aware of here is, it's okay for them to eat the paper, just not too much of it. If they look like they're going to dine on Chapters 1 through 4, distract them with another toy and give them a break from the book.

2. Baskets. You can buy wonderfully cheap baskets at places like Pier One, Target and CostPlus. Get the ones that are unfinished (ie: no varnish on them) and place them on the floor. Maybe put a few little bunny snacks in them to tempt them to climb inside. Your rabbit will use the basket as a climbing frame as well as something to chew on. They love wicker and straw and, because these are usually cheap, you can buy them a few to play with. Switch them out when they get too chewed or look like they're falling apart.

3. Cardboard and Toilet Rolls. Rabbits love to roll things and to chew, so the inside of paper towels or toilet rolls make awesome cheap rabbit toys. They'll roll them around, chew on them, tug them and get great exercise while at the same time exercising their jaws.

Did You Know?
Cheap rabbit toys are easy to find or make and can give your bunny hours of fun for very little money.

I thought I was going to have to get rid of my rabbit because his toys were costing me so much that I couldn't afford to keep buying them, and without them he was just too destructive to keep in my home. Thanks for the great ideas for inexpensive toys!

How cute! These toy ideas are most of the same things I used for my guinea pigs.
