Freelance Writing for a Living: Never Run Out of Topics to Write About

Freelance writing as a job is very rewarding, both emotionally and financially. However, when you write day in and day out for month after month you end up covering a whole lot of topics. What happens when you run out of things to write about? What do you do when the consistent idea flow ceases? Is there anything one can do when they have covered every topic already? Yes! There is!

Freelance writers need not fear ever running out of topic ideas if they do the following: Learn to put spins on general topics, read a lot, observe the world around them, and realize that EVERYTHING can be written about.

Let's go over those things one by one. Okay, first off, learning to put a spin on a topic. What does that mean? Well, take the topic of colic for example. A newborn health concern. Colic is a general topic. There have been hundreds maybe more articles written on it at AC alone. To put a spin on that topic would be to write about a specific aspect of colic. Maybe one could approach the common topic of colic with the spin of when to call the doctor for colic, or why babies with colic cry, or even physical symptoms of colic. I could create ten or more articles off of the one common topic of colic by simply putting unique spins on each. When writers can do that the same topic can be used again and again differently.

Nest is to read a lot. Reading materials written by others informs you. People need to learn in order to teach. If you have used up everything in your mind that you could possibly think of to write about then it's time to go reading! Read the newspaper to learn of what happens around you, read books on topics you'd love to learn or write about, etc. Reading helps us to educate ourselves and it also opens our minds. That makes us better writers too!

Observing the world around you is the next way on the list. Every aspect of your life is something to write about. Every aspect of the world around you is too. From nature to people and technology the world around you is booming with topics to write about. All you need to do is observe.
