It was a cold late October when without any real thought I changed my life. It wasn't that I was going to start dieting to lose weight, but I was going to start doing things that would change how I felt. I didn't think I was that overweight that it bothered me, or that anyone noticed, so it wasn't like I had will power on my side helping me out.

My doctor was highly concerned about the drastic weight loss I on the other hand was tickled pink, after all I'm no diet expert!

I wouldn't recommend this for just anyone, but I think if some aspects of how I lost the 40 pounds in a month applied to anyone's everyday living, weight loss will occur. Soda pop is full of calories, just as many juices are, and much like smoking and drinking a person can become addicted to it.

At the time I started the changes in my life, I didn't much care for water, and was truly addicted to soda pop, but I decided I would start with what I had thought would be the easiest change I could make. So, once a day I replaced my cup of soda pop with a glass of ice cold water. I forced myself to leave it by me all day, until I drank it all. After drinking a 12 ounce glass of water a day become something that didn't gross me out, I decided to step things up. I decided to drink two of those glasses of water a day, until I eventually had replaced all my glasses of soda pop.

I would still have the longing for a glass of soda pop, so every once in awhile, I would reward myself with a glass of pop, about once a week. Rewarding myself with the soda pop helped me maintain drinking water. This was a huge loss of sugar that I'm very sure of helped in the weight loss, but this wasn't all I did, after all if it was that simple, wouldn't everyone be doing it?

Did I exercise to lose those 40 pounds of weight in a month? Nope. Not once! In fact, I sat at the computer nearly 18 hours a day working.

That's great! But I agree, you should exercise and eat more healthier soups, foods, snacks and drinks. I like top ramen too and it's so cheap! But I have it once in awhile. I've so far lost 45 pounds mostly by my exercising for an hour a day with weights twice a week. My doc was shocked I lost weight quickly, but in a healthy way. You do have to be dedicated. You have to want it badly. I do! I eat no less than 1200-1300 calories. Anything less, I heard, is not healthy for your metabolism. I've cut out the sweets, butters, fats, sodas.........My cholesterol

Your method of losing weight isn't the healthiest way, but it works. My father is a personal trainer so I learned everything that I know from him. One main problem with your method is skipping breakfast. Breakfast is essential for daily energy and health. Exercise should be your top priority when dieting, hands down. Exercise increases endorphins, burns pure fat, can build strength, and increase muscle. You may relapse with your weight problem, so I suggest working out now, and a few times a week altogether. Also, eat healthier, and also eat at least 5 SMALL meals a day.

I don't think excercise is the number one issue here as a previous commentor stated, but rather the fact that these choices are pretty unhealthy. Yes, it's good that you cut out pop- that's definitely a good place to start. Even 100% fruit juice in excess is bad as it is full of sugar. However, skipping breakfast and eating Ramen for dinner isn't ideal. You get one rounded meal per day, and that's just not enough. Skinny DOESN'T equal healthy. Your body needs nutrients that can only be found a complete, well-balanced diet. There are NO nutrients in Ramen besides sodium- and that is way, way, way, WAY in excess. I'll bet if you replace that ramen with some lean protein and veggies- with some dressing like olive oil and vinegar as a fat to balance it out- you would not only LOOK better, but FEEL better. Fiber is a key ingredient to overall health, and unless you're taking a supplement, eating lots of whole grains and vegetables is the only way to get it. Remember- weight loss is only a s

Congrats on your weight loss! I was shocked to hear that you still lost while eating Ramen noodles. One cup of those noodles (with the full seasoning packet) contains at least one full day's worth of sodium. Eating too much sodium (also found in soda) can make you retain water. I guess you drinking all of that water helped flush your body out! Good job! :D

It sounds like you definitely had a plan, and it worked. Crazy how just a small change like swapping out 1 soda for a glass of water can snowball and lead to such a big change.

I've seriously lost 50 LBS in the last 2 months. It's called unemployment without any help from the government. Anyone else care to lose 50 LBS? Quit your job instead of killing your boss. Sometimes I wish I DID kill the boss because then I'd have a good 3 meals a day for the rest of my life... So now at this rate, I'll weigh -100 LBS in a few months...Unless, of course, 1,000,000 people want to see my articles this month :)

Great article, different things work for different people. You should be careful because those ramen soups have a lot of sodium in them which isn't good for you. Maybe you could switch the type of soup you are eating, so you aren't consuming such large amounts of sodium every day! And don't forget, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Just because you are loosing weight, doesn't mean you are more healthy. You need to implement some sort of exercise program within your daily life...your waistline may be shrinking, but your cardiovascular system is more than likely in the same terrible shape. Exercise is SO important, and by boasting you lost weight by not exercising is only going to give more people the notion that they do not need to exercise to get healthy. Congrats on loosing the weight, you should be very proud of yourself! However, if you walk around the block three times a week, undergo a light weight lifting program, which you can even do using cans of vegetables, your body will not only look better on the outside, but also on the inside. As much as our society HATES the word EXERCISE because it means getting up and moving, I cannot stress the importance a simple workout has on your body, both aesthetically and internally. You can be skinny and extremely unhealthy...

Congrats on your success at losing the pounds. I need to lose 50 pounds, so I might try your Ramen noodle idea. I love that stuff but never considered it very healthy. I always thought it was fattening. I gotta give up the donuts - that is my downfall. Thanks for sharing your story.

I recently made the decision to try and eat smaller portions, have salads for dinner, and to drink less soda and beer. So far, I've lost about five pounds; I think it definately makes a difference. Great article
