One of the first things that I can remember buying after high school and moving out into the big world was a cutting board. Since that first purchase I have bought others and received some as gifts. I have also admired different kinds of cutting boards that I have seen other people have. Whether you are planning on buying your first cutting board or are just not happy with the one that you have here are some pros and cons of the different types as well as some tips for buying.

Generally cutting boards are made from three different kinds of material, plastic, glass and wood. Plastic cutting boards are very common and they range in many different sizes, the first cutting board that I got was a large plastic one and I was given a small one as a gift very recently. I don't have the large one anymore, as after a couple years and many scratches I didn't feel that I could properly clean it. An important tip if you are getting a plastic cutting board is to keep in mind that it will not last forever, as when they get deep cuts you can not clean them properly. They can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

My mom had gotten a rather large glass cutting board and I thought that it was wonderful, both pretty and practical. I replaced my plastic one with a glass cutting board. I discovered the using this cutting board was loader than using a plastic one and later discovered that glass cutting boards are known to dull knives. As an added plus though it does make for a great place to serve things or to set hot pans on. If you can fit your glass cutting board into your dishwasher it can too be washed that way as well.

As a birthday gift my mom got a wooden cutting board, a bamboo one. Cutting boards can be made with a variety of different hard woods. Wood cutting boards are not going to last forever either though, like the plastic if they have deep cuts or have chucks missing they will need to be replaced. Some wooden cutting boards can be put into the dishwasher but it is important to read the manufacturers cleaning instructions before doing so.

I think I have one of every kind out there. My favorite ones are the cheap plastic bendable ones. The are easy too store and can replaced cheaply.
