Another thing that I like about having music on in the house is that it adds a certain amount of lightness to an usually busy and sometimes stressful day. I am sure that this works that same for my son. In addition to listening to music he enjoys dancing to it too. This makes listening to music a great way to get some exercise for the little one.
As I mentioned I had been playing many different genres to help him discover what he likes best and also so I can introduce him to such things as classical pieces. To be fair to him I have played him kid's music as well, as he got a couple different kid's CDs for Christmas. Even though sometimes I may not want to hear it I figure it is only fair to allow him to decide if it is something that he likes.
One thing that really is great about listening to music with your children is that it takes away from time that they may have wanted to watch television as a form of entertainment. Now while we do watch TV, I certainly try and keep the amount that my son watches limited and listening to music instead is a great way to do that. Sometimes we play music on the computer and although at first he wants to watch the computer as it play the music, but with little interest in the visual aspect my son will play with his toys or just dance nearly right away.
My son and I usually listen to things that are easy listening, at only 20 months I don't want to make him too overstimulated. I always choose pieces that are G rated, no foul language or inappropriate lyrics. I make mental notes of the songs that he takes more of a liking to and plan to make him a mixed CD, something that he can have as his own.
