Last season, the AL West was basically a one horse race. The Los Angeles Angels captured the division, and despite bowing out to the Red Sox in three games, had a succesful season. They didn't win a World Series, but they cemented themselves as a powerhouse in the American League. This year, they may have a fight on their hands if they want to recapture the AL West division. Seattle has gotten much better, and the Rangers may challange a little as well. Of course, we never know what is going to happen until we play the games, but for now, this is how I see the AL West looking by October:1. Seattle Mariners. Back in the late 90's, Seattle rescued themselves from obscurity and was put on the baseball map with big guns like Ken Griffey Jr, Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez, and Randy Johnson. Those players are long gone, and Seattle suffered for some years. 2008 will be a new start for Seattle, as they have added potential ace Erik Bedard to the top of the rotation. Bedard comes via a trade with Baltmore and gives the M's a legitimate chance to win everytime he takes the mound. Along with Bedard, the Mariners signed Carlos Silva to a 4 year deal, thrusting Silva into the 3rd slot in the rotation behind young phenom Felix Hernandez. With those three at the top, it will give plenty of save opportunities for J.J. Putz who is becoming one of the league's dominant closers.
At the plate, the Mariners are still something to be desired. They have Ichiro at the top, and Ibanez, Beltre and Sexson in the middle of the order, but they have pieces that may not always be as reliable. They Mariners are going to still be a great team despite that, and look for a division champion in the pacific Northwest.
