Haunted Places in Cape May, New Jersey

In the summer, the quiet seashore community of Cape May goes from a virtual ghost town to a vibrant city bustling with attractions and activities. Families can enjoy the local boardwalk, restaurant, and for the daring, ghost tours.

History of Cape May

Originally named Cape Mey, after the Dutch Sea Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, the town began as a whaling community. By 1720, one hundred years after its founding, Cape May had evolved from the whaling industry to the seaside resort business.

As with other cities, the resulting population increase lead to an influx of illegal activities including gambling and prostitution.

Bed & Breakfasts

It is believed that one young prostitute still resides the Queen's Hotel. Preferring to haunt the third floor, she has been blamed for jealously bumping women as she passes them in the hallways.

Another famous site is the John F. Craig Bed and Breakfast. They have been known to host seances and visits from Craig McManus, a psychic medium. According to John F. Craig's website, McManus is expected to return in March.

Trolley Tours

Craig McManus also offers haunted tours of Cape May. The tour guides of "The Ghosts of the Lighthouse Trolley Tour" weave tales of ghostly presences discovered by McManus as the Trolley carries you to the Cape May Lighthouse.

Walking Tours

If you like to take it slow, walking tours are offered by psychic researcher A.J. Rauber. Always leaving after dark, the Haunted Cape May Tour runs from May through November and lasts an hour-and-a-half. Private tours are also available by calling 609-463-8984 to make an appointment.

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, spirits, or hauntings, a visit to Haunted Cape May will at least be a fun way to scare your friends and family.
