Our Best Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky

I was pleased to learn that one of my favorite places to eat, Our Best Restaurant, had opened a location in the Hillview neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. A group of coworkers and I decided to try the new place recently.

The original Our Best is located in Smithfield, Kentucky, about 30 minutes from Louisville's east end. It is housed in an old flour mill and is very popular. At peak times, a group of diners can expect to wait up to two hours for a table. Our Best is known for its down-home country cooking. Southern dishes like meatloaf, catfish, fried chicken, and made-from-scratch pies are staples on the menu.

Upon entering the Our Best Restaurant in Louisville, I noticed first that inside it looks a great deal like the original location, only larger. Business cards cover the dining room walls, just like in the Smithfield restaurant, and the decor and furnishings are similar. The menu appeared the same as well.

Most dishes at Our Best Restaurant cost less than twelve dollars and include two side dishes and your choices of rolls or cornbread. There are a few larger and more expensive meals available, but I don't remember seeing anything more than fifteen dollars on the menu. We began our meal with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, a dish for which Our Best has become locally famous. They were crisp on the outside, hot, and delicious. The sauce that comes on the side is similar to thousand island dressing. Members of our group ordered as entrees chicken livers, chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, whitefish fillets, bean soup with cornbread, pork chops, and an open faced roast beef sandwich. All of us agreed that our respective meals were delicious. Most of us asked for carryout boxes to hold part of our generous meals in order to save room for dessert.
