HOW TO DRIVE SAFELY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

You may have thought that to drive without ever having an accident was impossible. It's not. We just need to know two things in order to accomplish that. This is the simplest tutorial you'll ever see, here or anywhere.
First: Pay attention to the road. This means exactly that: Watch where you're going and pay attention to your driving - see and hear everything on the street or highway and don't be distracted, no matter what. If you're not going to pay attention, then by all means just go ahead and close your eyes. You'll get the same result - a horrible accident.
Secondly: Keep your distance. Always drive a safe distance from objects and other cars. In other words, stay away from potential danger, like keeping your hands away from the fire.
We have been conditioned to think about dozens of safety rules that supposedly safeguard us against accidents. Forget them - they don't work. For instance, speeding is not as relevant to safe driving as you think. Why? Because distance is far more important. If you're too close to an object, it doesn't really matter whether you're doing five miles per hour or seventy. You will likely hit it. On the other hand, if you're doing seventeen thousand miles per hour in outer space, you have little to worry about because you're too far from everything. Distance is the real key. The only reason that distance is not regulated by traffic laws is that (so far) it's impossible to tell scientifically how close is too close. Speed, however, is regulated only because it's a lot easier to measure. However, all the auto manufacturers are currently experimenting with guidance systems that will soon tell you how close is too close. In the meantime, use your intuition.

Takeaways
  • This two-minute tutorial on driving is more effective than a six-hour defensive driving course.
