In my opinion the Gaggia MDF Burr Grinder with Doser tries to bridge the gap between the cheap local grinders and the ultimate Mazzer Mini. I would recommend this for home brewing provided you have the patience to learn all the settings that varies depending on the grind and amount of espresso. In way it is better than the local versions and is worth for $200. If you can afford a little more then I would suggest you to go for Rancillo Rocky or the Innova. These are not only silent operators but also sturdy and hardy. A lot depends on the consistency of the beans and the user's knowledge on grind settings. The other areas of concern that the first timers will find it rather confusing are how long to hold the dispenser switch, amount of water needed to be added and the milk frothing feature. Though these sound annoying in course of time you will get used to it. Now I have mastered the art of adjusting the tamp pressure and other settings and this was the only trouble shooting that I had with the MDF. To get consistent results I cleverly go for the medium settings and this keeps in you middle track away from the extremes.
Another major drawback is the rotating wheel that has an impact on the doser feature. I would not call it as flaw in the design because the MDF is designed for regular use and the efficiency of the doser depends on the way the user load the coffee beans. Most of them do the mistake of partially filling the five compartments in the wheel for enjoying a aromatic cup of espresso. But what happens is that as the lever is pushed down, the empty portion of the wheel directly about the dispenser does not have full stock of grounds and this alters the consistency of the coffee. This is meant for die hard coffee fans who tend to sip hot espresso every few hours. The more you use this machine, the more it surrenders to you.
