I didn't even plan to watch the American Idol results show on Fox on Thursday, Feb. 28. By chance, I was taping two shows at once, and so couldn't switch my digital cable to watch anything else.

When it came time to announce the first of two females leaving the show with the lowest votes, I was ready to see who America liked least. The two ladies asked to remain standing were Amanda Overmyer and Alexandrea Lushington. I said "Oh, Amanda is definitely going home." Her rendition of Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son" was absolutely atrocious -- possibly the worst performance I've ever heard on American Idol in all seven seasons.

On the other hand, Alexandrea's performance of Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now", while not necessarily the greatest song choice for this audience demographic, was one of the best vocals of the evening.

I couldn't contain my shock (and a few expletives) when Ryan Seacrest announced that Amanda was safe, and Alexandrea was going home.

Later in the show, when announcing the second female to be going home this week, the two girls left standing were Alaina Whittaker and Kady Malloy. "Surely," I thought out loud, "America will get this one right. Kady is going home."

Kady's rendition of "Magic Man" by Heart was absolutely horrible. Not to mention the fact that she nearly fell down the stairs in her monster heels, her singing was whiny and wandered through several octaves, never really settling on the right key. As if horrible singing wasn't enough, her attitude is plainly that of a -- well, of a female dog. Her expressions when taking criticism from the judges the past two weeks have spoken volumes.

Contrastingly, Alaina Whittaker is by far one of the best singers I've heard at such a young age. She picked quite a difficult act, trying to follow in the steps of the great Olivia Newton John with "Hopelessly Devoted." Nary a singer could pull that one off. But she did a great job.

So yet again, when Ryan announced that Kady was safe, and Alaina was going home, I was appalled. I thought to myself, "How could the American viewers be so absolutely [expletive] stupid?!?"
