Rainy Day? Feel like there is nothing to do? Well here are some ideas to get you having some fun even though the sun is not shining outside. Before you know it the rain will be gone and the sun will be back to play!

1. Make paper airplanes and fly them across the room.

2. Have your own film festival. Pick a theme and rent several action movies, or sci fi movies, or movies with the same actor in them.

3. Go to a museum or an aquarium

4. Do crossword puzzles – even make your own puzzles!

5. Try sudoku puzzles, fun for the whole family.

6. Play Scrabble, Monopoly or Candyland or another board game.

7. Bake cookies and give some to your family or friends.

8. Tell family stories and take the time to learn about family history.

9. Call someone you care about for a talk.

10. Make tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.

11. Make shadow puppets with your hands and a flashlight on the wall.

12. Make mandalas. Learn more about them here:

13. Make paper bag puppets with lunch bags.

14. Teach the children how to say hello and goodbye in a foreign language.

15. Teach mom how to play the video game all the kids are playing.

16. Get pizza delivered for lunch and eat it picnic style on the floor.

17. Draw pictures to send to the grandparents and other relatives. Sit down and write actual letters to everyone.

18. Go to the library and have everyone get a book they like. Take turns reading out loud from your books reading to each other.

19. Watch the Discovery channel and learn about animals and nature.

20. Write a funny story together, everyone writing one sentence until you get to “The End”.

Great fun, good read! Steven, be sure to keep a pen handy for scribling down idea for new stories during your travels. On rainy days I'll be looking to read an aspiring story or poem from you right here on AC. Good luck on your endeavors. There is a phase in an old familiar song that reads, "Rainy days, and Mondays always get me down". :(

Dude that freakin awesome, lolol. I'm printing this stuff out cuz honestly these things seem like fun things to do even if it's NOT rainy! Lol. Yeah, I already do Su DoKu puzzles all the time--they're ENGROSSING! I think the two that appeal to me the most though are learning "Hello" and "Good bye" in all the different languages (specifically because I'm going into the NAVY this summer as a CTI/translator) and learning about animals on the Discovery channel. The only thing I would add to the language thing is to also learn how to say "I love you" in all those different languages too. The only thing I wouldn't specifically like about the Discovery channel, though, is the fact that those tv people actually believe in evolution and the big bang type of junk. I'd just turn the volume down when they talked about that though, and listen to all the factual and real stuff. Like I said, I'm printing this, and fantastic ideas here!

only thing is kids pretty much stay indoors all day now, sadly. video games have taken over. i like video games a lot but moderation is the key.

lol. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so rainy day activities make me giggle. My favorite thing to do on a rainy day? Go about my life and try to keep my glasses from getting raindrops on them. Cheers!

If I had kids, I'd try to talk them into taking a nap or reading books. Reading and rain go well together. I like #9 and #18 regardless, but I usually mess around on the computer and keep my blinds open to watch the thunder and lightning. When I was little, I did the same thing.

thank you whoever took care of this! I wrote an article on this situation after visiting this article a week or so ago. I didn't know how to purge.

Thanks for purging the obnoxious comments, Abigail Beal! For those who no longer see the point of my comment: (1) Anonymous comments have been blocked on this article because a lot of teenaged trolls were posting dozens of rude, obscene comments. (2) If any of you ever find another nice, family-friendly article polluted with obnoxious comments, the way to share it with the family is to click on the "print" button to print the text-only version...makes all the little trolls disappear. Lovely.

The author of the Rainy Day article speaks: I would like to thank all of you for visiting my article. This article was targeted to families with young children looking for more to do than popping another video in the television set. Yes, many of the ideas are old fashioned -- but they are also inexpensive. They are also ideas that kids can have lots of fun with. Are they things you do together as a family? That's the whole POINT! From now on I will certainly be watching comments to this article much more closely, I am sorry for others that they got this way out of hand. Thank you for reading my articles. Have a great day -- no matter the weather! :) Yours, Abigail :)
