After becoming weary of hearing the persistent chatter that Barack Obama might be a Muslim, I decided to dig a little deeper and take an objective look at his church and its statement of faith.

Trinity United Church of Christ is an 8,000 member congregation in Chicago that has been pastored by Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. since 1972. The church is the largest congregation in the United Church of Christ, a denomination that is widely known for its liberal political views.

Hoping to silence the Muslim rumors, Obama recently admitted that he found Jesus through Pastor Wright who is one of his mentors. In 1991, Obama joined the church in a formal ceremony, signifying his acceptance of the Christian faith and his allegiance to Trinity. Wright also performed the marriage ceremony for Obama and his wife Michelle Robinson, and baptized their two daughters.

Barack's pastor is one of the first people he thanked after his election to the Senate in 2004. Also, the title of Obama's bestseller "The Audacity of Hope" comes from one of Wright's sermons.

Barack's church has been under fire for many years. Of all the alleged racist activities of Trinity United Church, one of the most controversial issues is their adoption of the Black Value System. The Black Value System was written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee in 1981 and states:

"We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:

Takeaways
  • Barack's pastor is one of the first people he thanked after his election to the Senate in 2004.
  • The title of Barack Obama's bestseller "The Audacity of Hope" comes from his pastor's sermon.
  • Trinity United Church recently awarded Louis Farrakhan its highest social achievement award.

Nice article. Very articulate and objective - simply stating the facts. The fact that Obama has spent 20 years listening to this man preach and advise makes me very leary of where his standards are. Your point that if they replaced "black" with "white" in the church's statements.... oh my goodness.. we'd never hear the end of it.

Interesting article Kim. I found it very helpful. I am not a Obama supporter because his liberal view are often (but not always) in opposition to mine. However, I have been very leery of accepting at face value some of the accusations leveled against him. I hate smears and spin even when used against someone I oppose. I was disturbed by some of what Wright said in the sermon that caused all the furor. At the same time, I thought some was taken out of context and misused for political spin. I do understand why a church that ministers to a mostly black community sometimes adopts policies that may seem slanted. I don't think that *necessarily* reflects racism. Sometimes it is just dealing with the unique needs of it's congregation. The fact is that *some* of those needs are different than the needs of a white congregation. On the other hand, a Christian church should be looking ultimately to Christ Jesus for answers and not to social policy. It's a tough issue.

In America and all over the world, Christ followers need to pray on a consistent basis for what is happening in our country. However, we must remember that God is in control. Everything that happens sifts through His mighty fingers and happens for a reason. People are fooled so often by the hype. Only God knows the heart. We must pray for God's will and accept it, whatever it is. America is in line, I'm afraid for correction and discipline whether it comes from within our own system or from far away. God help us all.

Barack has another notorious cousin: Dick Cheney. If any affiliation can make a person evil by default...

By the way, Waldorf PC, slavery is not over. It's still happening in parts of Africa, and even when it ended in America, that still did not stop the effects of it: burning and bombing of Black Wall Street, Jim Crow, hanging being legal, Brown vs. Board of Education, and so forth. It's nice to think it was so long ago, but the effects of it were still happening throughout the 1900s.

Here's my issue: If we're going to hold reverends accountable for presidential elections, then shouldn't we be eyeing McCain too? McCain's friend, late Rev. Jerry Falwell, who said 9/11 was retribution from God, and Rev. John Hagee who said the Catholic Church "thirsted for the blood of the Jewish people" thoughout its history and that Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans to prevent a gay pride march? Do Obama naysayers hate him for his disrespect for homosexuality and translationof September 11th too? And just an FYI, if you want to find out more about why Rev. Wright may have a point about HIV/AIDS being a manmade disease, check out this six-part YouTube video set: http://www.youtube.com/v/Ml7q6iMwqLY&hl=en

W. Williams, i do not want to find out the hard way. It seems that people are ignoring the signs. It would do good for people to take their blinders off. Check out my article. It gives some great insight that I feel ALL should see.

You couldn't have said it better. Gosh! I agree with you ten hundred percent!!!! No person, no matter what race they are should be allowed to make racial statements. The argument and fighting between blacks and whites needs to stop. Slavery was over a hundred years ago. I hate when people bring up that stuff since people of today have no control of what happened then. What's the point of being mad at one another? It just keeps hatred alive. Please, it is so rediculous. Separating ourseves just makes things worse. You might want to take a look at my article. Maybe, it will empower you to write more on Obama. Five Stars by the way!

Obama should have "renounced" Reverend Wright's comments 20 years ago. Unfortunately for Obama, his falling out with the Reverend comes a little too late. He can thank Wright for tipping the superdelegate's over to Hillary's camp. After this embarrassing spectacle, no one can say she "stole" it.
