So you’ve had your baby; you’re home from the hospital; the baby is nursing well. In a few weeks, you will look in a mirror and wonder if you will ever look the same as you did before you got pregnant. You might not, but here’s good news. If you are breastfeeding, that might be the best and easiest way for you to lose that weight.

If you gained 35 pounds while you were pregnant, and lost the typical 12-14 pounds having the baby, that leaves you with about 21 pounds to lose. And if you are breastfeeding your baby, you know you can’t go on a drastic Slim-Fast or other type of diet to lose it fast.

Did you know that nursing requires an additional 500 nutrient-dense calories a day? That’s a lot of calories that little one is using up. A mom who is breastfeeding her baby as often and for as long as baby wants often finds that she loses the weight by the time she looks up and draws breath again. That’s typically around 8-10 months, by the way.

Some lucky moms even find that while they are breastfeeding their child, they can indulge in calorie-rich, not so nutrient-dense foods without gaining weight. Remember the woman in “Desperate Housewives” that worked with Felicity Huffman? How she cried when her 5 year old weaned because “now she’d have to go to the gym”? That was a bit of an exaggeration: by the time a breastfeeding child is five, he isn’t using up enough calories for a weight-loss benefit anymore. But during that first and sometimes even second year of breastfeeding, some moms find that feeding their child is as effective as an exercise routine when it comes to the scale.

Takeaways
  • Breastfeeding uses up to 500 calories per day.
  • If a mom doesn't eat enough, the milk supply can suffer.
  • Exercise is wonderful for new moms, and perfectly safe for breastfeeding.
Did You Know?
Want to know why you gain so much fat while you are pregnant? It's because your body knows you need that fat to feed your newborn.

I think Timothy was being sarcastic about the breast feeding picture being horrendous, I could be wrong but I don't think so:)

Hey timothy sexton, just like the other women the breast is meant to feed a child and i see nothing wrong with it i feed my child at the breast and is is only 6 weeks old and if the moraility police dont like it they can kiss my big fat butt. i feed sometimes in my car when my child is hungry. I see nothing wrong with that picture its just nature ad they nothing wrong with it and you need to get over yourself big time.. Breast feeding is beautiful and very good for the child. We all can tell you were not breast feed due to your lack of knowledege and your pure stupidity. I think its time for these dead beat men to realize that woman are not they sex objects and breast are not sexual objects they are meant to feed a child why do you think they produce milk? Duh!!!! We are mammals unless you dont know what that is either. Woman breast are all ove tv and beaches and even onthe internet and i pretty sure you own a copy of girls gone wild so dont come to a breast feeding site and give the

wow..that timothy sexton is a real retard.. i bet timmy really enjoys looking at boobies when he's spanking his monkey but to actually use the breast for what it's intended for goes right over his head. wonder what the guy was doing here on the site in the first place..he's only pissed because in the picture...the kid's in the way!

I'm an American (there is a capital "A" in American by the way) and I am very suprised someone would have a problem with a mother breast feeding their child. It is natural, and the healthiest thing for a baby. You know... some bikinni's and most cable telivision show more breast then that picture. Also, timothy Sexton, like most men, are confused when it comes to the purpose of a breast. It is not supposed to be a sexual object like many men associate it, it is MEANT FOR FEEDING CHILDREN!!

Thanks fo rthe article. I'm breastfeeding my second child whio is 9 months old now, have regained my pre-pregnancy weight, but really want to lose another 20 or so to get back to my pre-pre-pregnancy weight. I've been stuck where I am for about 2 months, have started an excercise program, and a pretty good about my diet...I am actually thinking I am not eating enough...could that be a reason for me holding on to the extra weight?

Morality Police - God get a life. Bet they're american in the majority. It would just be so typical that a nation that has completely lost it's sense of humanity would winge about a picture of a baby feeding. Ooooh the PC police let's all quiver in supressed normality. Perhaps a homeless person on smack would be better recieved as is more the norm in society. Enjoyed the article by the way.

adam, thanks for your remarks. My mom also had 12 kids, 7 girls, 5 boys. She breastfed most of them.

breastfeeding is great, it helps kids get strong and moms loose weight. nice My mom has had 12 kids, 8 boys 4 girls, all of us were breast fed. Maybe that's how my mom has stayed so skinny throught this all. Cause she rarely did any exercise, besides cleaning up after us and keeping us out of trouble. Maybe that was an exercise routine in itself. Breastmilk, it does a newborns body good. later Adam

but isn't it a beautiful thing

Wow, you are really taking a chance on getting hit by the morality police here at AC for daring to show such a horrendous site as a baby feeding at his mother's breast. Just wanted to give you a heads-up that other breastfeeding articles have brought out the morality police in droves. But then again, most of them were supporting public breastfeeding.
