How Writer's Forums Can Improve Your Fiction Writing

Writers are often solitary creatures, sitting in dimly lit bedrooms or trendy cafes and typing away on laptops and computers. But maintaining total solitude can prevent your writing skills from improving, and can definitely put a damper on your career.
Fiction writers should use online writer's forums and discussion groups to improve their chance for becoming published.

Writer's Forums - Skills

No matter how good you are at fiction writing, there is probably someone better: at least in one aspect of writing. Visiting fiction writer's forums is a great way to get tips on everything from grammar and punctuation to plot, world-building, and character creation. Of course, there is a great chance that you are better than other writers as well. Do not take every piece of advice on writer's forums as the gospel truth. Forums, after all, are filled with opinions not backed up by any grammar and style books.

Writer's Forums - Critiquing

Many writer's forums have password protected critique sections. The password protection is important. If your story is open to be seen by the public, or internet search engines, it is considered published. Critique forums are very helpful to fiction writers. Grow a thick skin, open your mind, and accept all criticisms and helpful hints. Act on those you find worthwhile.

Receiving critiques is not the only thing that can help you become a better writer however. Giving critiques is just as important. Be honest, read the stories offered for critique with a discerning writer's eye. If you can catch rough patches in other's stories, you will get better at catching them in your own.

Writer's Forums - Networking

While some fiction writer's may choose a solitary existence, they should still realize that networking with other writers can help their career. Writer's forums often have sections where leads and new markets are discussed and announced. When fiction writers share their experiences in submitting to these markets, other writer's on the forum can learn where to submit, how long to wait for a response, and how to get over the rejection.

This is addional information about sources which I have to get more involved with. I admit that I am delinquent in doing this. Most of my articles are non-fiction which is a lot easier for me than fiction. However, I love the creativity of fiction. Great article.
