Not only can volunteering to make a difference help people in your community, but it can offer you quite a few benefits. Volunteering is one of the things in life where you actually get more back than you give. There are so many ways to consider volunteering that there is sure to be a volunteer project that is just right for you.

Volunteering can help teach you new skills. It is a great way to get a chance to do something when you may have little experience actually doing something that interests you. Most charitable organizations are happy to have a volunteer who is passionate about doing something who may be full of good intentions but low on actual experience. This is a great opportunity for you that few jobs will give you. Volunteering to fund-raise can teach you how to approach new people with confidence and give you sales skills. Volunteering to write press releases or a brochure for a charity can teach you writing and marketing skills. Managing a group of other volunteers on a project can teach you supervisory skills and how to work with others on a project. Often once you have handled a smaller project, an organization will gladly give you a larger project – so you gain experience as you are ready for it in a gradual way, not in a way that overwhelms you. Volunteer work can help you discover your passions and may even lead you to a new career!

Volunteer work is a great for your career. It is a terrific subject to put on your resume, and it can help show an employer about your skills, especially if you haven’t had the chance to utilize all of them in your current job. Volunteer work is also great to put on a resume if there is a gap in your employment, perhaps you have been at home with children or you have had an illness. It is also a great thing to put on your resume if you are a new graduate and new to the workforce. Volunteer work shows an employer a lot about your personality and ethics – that you are responsible, you are civic-minded, that your community is important to you and that you are a caring person.
