Walk a little plainer, Daddy,
Said a little boy so frail,
For I'm following in your footsteps,
And I don't want to fail.

Sometimes your steps are very plain,
Sometimes they're hard to see,
So walk a little plainer, Daddy,
For you are leading me.

I know that you once walked this way
Many, many years ago,
And what you did along the way
I'd really like to know.

For sometimes when I'm tempted,
I don't know what to do,
So walk a little plainer, Daddy;
You know I'm following you.

Someday when I'm grown up,
You are like I want to be;
Then I will have a little boy
Who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead him right
And help him to be true,
So walk a little plainer, Daddy,
I'm going to follow you.

I am the author of the poem ,Walk a Little Plainer, Daddy , that you have published . I wrote it in 1965 when I was employed at ITT Telecommunications Plant in Milan,TN. I have seen it on several sites on the net, but being so very new to a PC, it has been very difficult to know just how to communicate with these people. Thanks for the comment section. I have documentation to prove that I did write it. In fact , I still have the original time card I used to scribble the lines on. One site had Forrest Flowers as author, but most of the time it is "author unknown". I can not imagine anyone taking credit for someone else's work! I would be delighted to see my name and the copywrite date under my poem...what an honor that would be. That poem has been around the world, I have traced it everywhere. Seems no one knows that I wrote it but my family, my friends and God ,to whom I give full credit. I would be so very grateful if you would do this for me. janette.ingram@gmail.com Than

Katlyn, as parents we usually find out just how much our children watched us when they're older and begin acting out. Then it's almost too late. One of the sad realities of life unless we've lived admirably. Thanks for commenting!

Try and remember that, JLN, even when you're tempted to act out in your "rough neck ways". (Just ribbin' ya!) Yes, kids are like little sponges, just soaking up attitudes, moods, and watching... always watching.

An exceptional and touching poem. The meaning is profound and if only every parent could understand that children's little feet walk step by step behind them.

Thank you for pointing out how, even if you think they're not listening, kids are ALWAYS WATCHING!

Ah, Nick: "the sins of the father". You know what has always puzzled me was how preachers are quick to tell us sins of the father will be passed down to the 3rd and 4th generations. But I never hear them quote the rest of that scripture: the blessings of the father will be passed down to a thousand generations! I'm glad you made those changes. We all make changes when we start having kids... that is, if we are living for Christ and not for the world.

Awesome job! I must say that I had to make changes in my life which were unlike my family's history in order to try and ensure that my children would break free of that mold.
