Parakeets are very popular choices for pet birds for both their size and price. Many parakeet owners are well aware of how much parakeets love their toys and many parakeet owners love to make toys for their parakeets or to buy them some to have in their cage. Whether you are buying your parakeet's toys or making the parakeet toys yourself there are some things to keep in mind for your parakeet's safety. Many parakeet toys are made with either wood or metal or both. When it comes to any parakeet toys that have metal make sure that the metal does not have zinc or lead in it. Both of these substances can cause harm to your parakeet. When it comes to parakeet toys that are made with wood it is important that the wood is not treated and that glue is not involved in the manufacturing of the wooden bird toy.
As you will see there are many parakeet toys that have little beads and bells on them. Usually parakeets like to move beads back and worth, or up and down and often enjoy getting the bells to jingle. When you choose a parakeet toy that has either beads or bells or both bells and beads it is important that they do not have small parts that are so small that the parakeet can choke on them. Also many times bells will have tiny holes, which parakeets can get their beaks, feet and even tongues caught in.
Two other very important concerns that parakeet owners have with toys that they buy or make is that toxic paints were not used on them. Also the rope that you use to hang the toys up will undoubtedly be also played with by your parakeet and it is important that all natural and untreated sisal or cotton is used. These are probably the reasons that people are often eager to make toys for their pet birds than to buy them if they can't find such things as "Lead Free" and "Zinc Free" metals on the packaging as well as "Non-Toxic Paint." People feel that as long as they know that the wood that they are using to make the toys is untreated, as well as the rope that they use and any other parts and materials that go in or on the toy is safe they will know that there bird will be safe.
