What is a "Muscle Car" ,and how do you determine if an automobile is considered a muscle car?
The term muscle car usually refers to an automobile with lots of horsepower, limited weight and quick acceleration.
" Old time "Muscle Cars" were machines with big blocks V-8s, by this I mean internal combustion engines with a lot of horsepower per cubic inch,
designed for maximum torque and built for drag racing.
Now choosing an old muscle car as your favorite is a matter of personal preference. The first consideration in choosing the best "Old Muscle Cars of All Time" is to determine what block the automobile has. I will start by listing my favorite motors and go from there.
Big Blocks
#1 426 cu in. Hemi
#2 427 cu in. Chevrolet
#3 428 cu in. Ford
#4 421 cu in GM/Pontiac,Buick
#5 454 cu in GM/Oldsmobile/Chevy
#6 390 cu in Ford
#7 396 cu in Chevy

Some of the best old muscle cars might not have a "big block" but have a high performance "small block", I suppose it depends on who is giving the definition.
I consider the following "small blocks" as filling the requirement of a lot of horsepower, torque,quick acceleration and designed for drag racing.

Yea I did kinda overlook the Buick but thought the Olds 442 was more of a machine but no doubt the buicks were right up there and in fact I am going to pick up a 77 Rivera with a 406 in it and see if I can have a little fun,

you guys forgot all about the buicks skylarks and the gsx and gs
455 man were actually on the balls of the hemi
Both the 409 and 400 are great blocks. Just could not put them in my top ten but would be glad to have either. I just bought a 77 buick rivera and I believe it is a 403 verdict still out on this block no nothing about it but will be driving it home soon so maybe I will have to do a top 15 or 20.

Those muscle cars could hit another car and not get a dent. Today's cars can't handle it.
