Tween birthday parties require imagination. They're too old and too cool for a traditional cake or a no-imagination shindig. You need to be cutting edge in order to impress your tween, and these parties (both for girls) will keep them busy and keep them talking.

Fashion Shoot Birthday Party
Many young girls dream of being a model, and even those who don't love to play dress up and spend time with their friends comparing fashion, makeup and more.
This party requires a bit of imagination, and maybe the help of a tween herself. Go to a thrift store or second-hand store, or have each girl bring their most fashionable clothes with them. If you're gathering clothes, think of the biggest girl in the group and make sure you have some options for her (nobody likes hurt feelings!)
Enlist the help of a photographer, preferably someone with a little fashion experience. This doesn't have to be an expensive proposition - if you don't know someone, look on craigslist for a student photographer. They should have their own photo gear and be able to assemble a simple background. You might be able to help with a high-quality flat bedsheet hung on a curtain rod or something similar.

Have the girls spend all the time they want changing clothes, putting together outfits, doing their hair and makeup, and then they can pose for the camera. Not only will this be a dream come true for some of the girls, but they'll all have souvenirs from the parties later on, when the pictures are processed and sent back. It's a belated party favor!

For the traditional trimmings, serve cake and ice cream in individual serving pans (they make some shaped like stars, so each girl feels like a star!) and decorate tables with photos cut from magazines of high-fashion models. Have a stack of magazines nearby and let the girls go wild recreating poses for the camera. Even if your girls seem camera-shy at first, you won't be able to pull them away from the camera after awhile!

This reminds me of parties my sister and I used to have. Our birthdays are a day apart and so our mom often threw us "joint b-day parties." Great ideas Ms. Gray!
