Thrift stores are an excellent place to find great merchandise at low prices, but you can't just walk in off the street and expect to find everything you need. The merchandise at these store turnover quite rapidly, and every day you might find something new. By following a few simple tips you can maximize your shopping experience while minimizing the money that leaves your wallet.

Shop Often.

Thrift stores repeatedly see items disappear quickly, and new merchandise rapidly arrive. While the store might not have what you're looking for now, it might appear tomorrow, next week, or next month. The best thing to do is visit as often as possible, and also find out when the store receives new merchandise. If you visit on a day when the new merchandise hits the floor, head off early in the day to beat the crowds.

Shop in Advance.

While you might not find those exact pants that your son needs now, you might find a great deal on a pair that he'll need in a few months. The same holds true for off season clothing. Many thrift stores are beginning to lower their prices on seasonal clothing at the same time the major retailers do. For example sweaters and winter coats will go on sale in February. You can still get some wear out of the clothes, and find some extremely low prices.

Shop After the Holidays.

Some thrift stores have deals set in place with major retailers to sell their excess holiday themed merchandise. Goodwill stores in my area sell merchandise from Target that didn't sell during the holidays. Last year I found some great Easter baskets in Goodwill the month after Easter for 1/4 of their retail price. I picked up Hello Kitty, Superman, and a few others for this year. Shopping thrift stores after the holidays can help you find some great deals for the next time the holiday rolls around.

Wear Comfortable Clothes.
