It's been a rough past couple of days. Two days ago my car's engine broke down. So I took my car into the shop to give me some time to decide on whether to put a new engine in the old car or whether to buy a new one.Last night, I got really sick and started to throw up. I stopped worrying about the car and focused on getting better. This morning I felt good enough to make it to school. After the first class, my computer fell off of my desk. Now my computer experts tell me that I will need a new hard drive. Then, something happened that overshadowed these proceedings and made my problems seem like little scrapes on the metaphorical skin of my heart. Brett Favre is retiring.

The story has circulated all morning on Espn.com. Brett apparently is done. He's had it with all the pressure that each season brings, so he's going to step aside. After 17 seasons, he most certainly deserves it. Butw hat does this mean to a Packer fan? What does this mean to me? It means more than you can imagine. It doesn't just mean that they may return to a mediocrity that most Packers fans remember and poke fun at as if it were an an old habit. It doesn't just mean that the rag tag bunch of young guns on Green Bay's football team will have to step up and win games by themselves. No. It means that the heart, soul, and passion of a state is gone.

To Packer fans Brett Favre is just that. He is the heart of Wisconsin. He is a country boy who has always worked hard. Sure, he's had his problems just like the rest of us. These problems took their form in alcoholism, pain killer addictions, and marriage troubles. But Brett has always been able to bounce back. His dad died and Brett returned on the following Monday against the Raiders to set a career high for passing yards. He's thrown touchdown passes with broken fingers, a dislocated shoulder, and a concussion. Yes, Brett Favre is human and he has his inadequacies (after all, he is the all time leader in interceptions), but Brett Favre has always come back.

Did You Know?
Brett Favre has retired, but he will always be remembered.
