Is The Colosseum Impressive Enough to Be One of the Seven Wonders of the World?
Rome, Italy
The Colosseum in Rome is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Built in the first century A.D., this spectacular amphitheatre was made to seat 50 000 spectators.
To be able to take a ten minute walk from the hotel, and then find yourself in front of one of the Seven Wonders of the World is incredible. All the years of history passes you by as you stand with an awing expression, not being able to move a muscle. Smells, sounds, sights, customs and traditions that are long gone reappear in your head. At least this happened to me, but then again, whenever I visit a sight I always try to imagine what it was like years ago. It makes it more interesting for me, as I want to know not what it's like today, but what it was like in its current time.
With that being said it's probably not going to be worth travelling to Rome if the only purpose of the trip is to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Colosseum is astonishing, and is a sight that everyone should visit at least once, but Rome has so much more to offer as well. Let's face it, the Colosseum is a ruin. Now, unless you have an exceptional interest in ruins, then an hour of the Colosseum is probably going to fill your appetite for at least one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Luckily however, Rome has many other sites to visit. If you are interested in other attractions as well, then a trip to Rome is well worth your while. You should most definitely get a hotel in the city centre to get the full feeling of the city and its history. You can walk out of a SubWay with a Veggie Delite, and then eat the sandwich on a bench a block away, in between ancient ruins that have been standing for two thousand years. The feeling of that is unbelievable.
