Rosie O'Donnell is amazing. In less than three full weeks as co-yenta on The View, she has succeeded in offending almost eighty percent of the U.S.; and shown, beyond any reasonable doubt, she is confounded by high school civics. She believes that Christianity is as dangerous to America as Islam. That her churlish comment was greeted by applause from the studio audience goes a long way to explaining the popularity of programs like The View, and professional twitters like Ms. O'Donnell. It also defends the thesis that democracy is not a good thing. For those of you who missed it, here is Ms. O’Donnell waxing nescient:

"Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America where we have a separation of church and state. We're a democracy here."

That statement is so fundamentally wrong, it hurts to think about it. First off, the U.S does not have a ‘separation of church and state’. The phrase “separation of church and state” is nonexistent in the Constitution. Look it up if you don't believe me, I'll wait. What the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment does offer is the freedom to practice religion without government interference. In other words, religion is protected from politicians’ meddling in it, not the other way around. Any citizen, religious or otherwise, has the right, nay the duty, to meddle, redress, or otherwise participate in government. When politicians meddle in religion you end up with theocracies in the Middle East or seventy-four dead in Waco.

Secondly, the U.S. is a Republic, NOT a democracy. The words are not interchangeable. Democracy means mob rule and the founders were vehement that the U.S. not become a democracy.
According to founding father James Madison:

“Democracy is the most vile form of government. Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention: have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property: and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.”

Tony, Great article! Where do you find such great pictures? I'm jealous! Yes, what Rosie said was very offensive. Did she ever end up apologizing? In my mind, she meant to say something like, "Any religion, when taken to extremes--has the potential to become dangerous." But, since this is not, in fact, what came out of her mouth--she really needed to apologize. You're exactly right--comparing the two religions is completely illogical. In my opinion, Rosie was possibly on something (an antidepressant or something?). Before The View, she seemed to be just the opposite kind of person...laid back and easy to get along with. Who knows what was up with her! Great piece!

Can't believe I'm just getting around to reading this... it is a fabulous article! First of all, you are absolutely correct about seperation of church and state. The only time that phrase was used was in a single personal letter written by Thomas Jefferson. I learned in High School (where did Rosie attend that they did not teach this?) that we live in a democratic republic. We took parts of the ideas of democracy and used them to bolster our Republic. I agree with Manda that it took guts to write this piece and applaud you for it. For those who chose to blast the ideas presented, I ask them to read the Koran and the Holy Bible. Only one espouses killing anyone who doesn't believe as it says. Christianity doesn't ask it's children to kill themselves and other to get to Heaven. While there are wacko factions in any "religion," people of faith do not do "religion," they have a relationship with God. There is a difference. Keep up the good work!

Get rid of Rose O....she is ruining the View...I haven't watched the show in 3 weeks and many of my friends can't stand her mouth either...GET RID OF HER WHILE YOU STILL HAVE AN AUDIENCE!

Tony, great article. You make some excellent points about the difference between democracy and the rule of a republic. As far as Rosie O'Donnell is concerned, I think the woman is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She's not funny, she's rather stupid and apparently has insulted many different kinds of people.

That serves that Barbara Walters right. She is such a fake. I am glad that Rosie is showing her ass. the didn't appreciate a lady and fired Star because Barbara is a jealous bitch.

"Since 1977, casualties from this war9referring to the war of radical christians against abortion)include seven murders, 17 attempted murders, three kidnappings, 152 assaults, 305 completed or attempted bombings and arsons, 375 invasions, 482 stalking incidents, 380 death threats, 618 bomb threats, 100 acid attacks, and 1,254 acts of vandalism, according to the National Abortion Federation."- http://ww4report.com/node/2634 Now, whether you agree with abortion or not, this is still terrorism in the name of religion.

We are a "representative republic" and we elect those representatives in a democratic fashion. So while you are right that we are a republic, it is not necessarily incorrect to refer to America as a democracy in conversation. Also, she said "radical christianity", so whats the problem? She didn't say that Christians in general are a threat. You also seem to be glossing over the blood shed in the name of Christ when you ay that we can't compare Islam and Christianity, suggesting that only Islam has a scarred history. just last month, on the anniversary of 9/11, an affiliate of the "Army of God" droves his car thorugh a health clinic hoping to blow it up and kill himself for Christ. He thought abortions were being performed there but was mistaken. Seems pretty comparable to Islamic extremism to me...

Hit the nail on the head!!

Excellent. I kind of like Rosie but anything she says I take with a grain of sale. Everything I believe is just for the ratings. She doesn't really care what she says. ALL FOR RATINGS. Therefore, I loved your article.

I'd like this to be sent to Barbra Walters and her crew. Surely, someone saw the potential horrors of Rosie as an unrestrained host. Congratulations on a factual and interesting piece.

It just goes to show you tom cruse is not the only one with a head full of saw dust, who says anything just to try and further their career. It seems you only print the positive comments in favor of you.

I don't have a problem with what Ms. O'Donnel said. I fear radicals of any kind, and George Bush hasn't been going around talking about how our soldiers are dying for Republics. They're Dying for Democracy, so I think it's a valid characteristic of our representative democracy.

according to your quotes and sources, she said "RADICAL" Christianity and not Christianity. Radical anything can be dangerous. Muslims are no danger to me. Radical Muslims want to kill me. Radical Christians can be found in Neo Nazis, Klansmen, and militia people in the woods of Montana. Radical Christians like Eric Rudolph bomb clinics. Radical-like statements made by Pat Robertson that say "we need to take him out" when referring to a foreign leader ARE dangerous. Radical satements made by Jerry Fallwell that say 9/11 was punishment to us for tolerating sin is wrong. And they both apologized for saying those things. What she said is true. And I'm a devout Christian.
