Iraq: The Consequences of Withdrawal

Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, recently told Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that the best way for him to end the ongoing violence and ensure stability and security was to begin the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Iraq. Khamenei was explicit in his
desire to see the rapid departure of American soldiers, but the consequences of a premature U.S. withdrawal would prove to be nothing short of catastrophic.

There are three basic parties, excluding American Democrats that are actively pushing for the removal of U.S. and coalition troops from Iraq: Iran, the Shiite faction led by radical Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, and the foreign jihadists who have flocked to Iraq to confront the United States in the Global War on Terror.

Iran has been making a concerted effort to establish itself as the leading state in the Middle East. In pursuit of this strategic goal, Khamenei and Iranian President Ahmadinejad have been actively antagonizing the United States over their nuclear program in order to portray Iran as a nation that must be reckoned with. Simultaneously, the Iranians have used Hezbollah to wage a proxy war against Israel, and the Shiites in southern Iraq to foment unrest that threatens the fragile government in Baghdad.

The conflict in Lebanon and the increasing Shiite-Sunni violence are meant to further demonstrate to the west that Iran has the ability, and the will, to destabilize the entire region for political gain. With the United States out of Iraq, there would be little to stop the Iranians from turning Iran into a satellite state that could help cement Iran’s hegemony in the region.

Good article Greg. I would interview many local Iraqis and inquire directly from them how they feel about becoming an Iranian Satellite state. I think you will find that most Shi'as interviewed will tell you that they have no desire to fall under Iran's thumb. Will it be forced upon them if we leave? Perhaps, but more likely it would be temporary. As I have advised in the past, this scenario is one of many likelihoods of an early U.S. departure. As a reference, I would suggest analysing the Shi'a cleric seniority status between Iran and Iraq. It will shine some light in this matter, but its only a start.

I was opposed to the war. I think it was a pre-text to a wider political (and rather Shortsighted, and poorly thought out) Agenda of the Neo-Cons. BUT i do agree that we cannot leave Iraq now, and need to ensure stability and security before we leave. The real question is who and how this should be done. The GOP have proven inept and unethical and the Dems lack the nerve to state the obvious. Staying the course is unacceptable. Rummy and Cheney and Rice have lost all credibility. for the last 2 years of his administration Bush needs to get a new team together, get a new strategy, and execute it.

Actually, American presence after the war made the place less stable than it would have been if we just left and let them salvage as much of their old political system as possible: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/67896/the_rebuilding_disaster_triumph_of.html

A pleasure to read something on this issue that is thoughtful and not pure partisanship. Nice work.

I'm glad to see you worried about how America looks in the eyes of the world. I think that you're right to worry--because our reputation is what is going to win or lose this war. Where we may part company, however, is that I think what we're doing here at home is doing about twenty times more damage to our moral standing and ability to win this war, than the hit we may take if we withdraw.

That was a great article Greg. I agree totally with every word. If we got out of Iraq and let the terrorists have their way, and if we do not stand up to Iran in its mad desire to create a nuclear bomb and its proxy war against Israel, the world will be a lot less safe place. I also disagree with you Ali. The land Israel has it only has because it was attacked by its neighbors. It needs that land to protect itself and should never give it back. It would not have it if its neighbors had not attacked it, so it is Israel's neighbors fault it has the land in the first place. There may be many peace loving Palestinians, but why did the people there elect a terrorist government?

Aha, but the majority of muslims condemn terrorist actions... There can be a peaceful solution to this. Israel must recongnize palestine. In fact, U.S must Push for the peace in palestine. This will cause now U.S enemies to become allies, and finally bring peace to the middle east... or we can just keep bombing the shit of of them and enforce the ideology that America is the great satan which Al Q feeds on.

I agree Donna! We are their only support right now and if we leave them they will never have the security or confidence to uphold a new government. It is funny though that these liberals who want us out keep sympathizing with the terrorists and not caring what happens to the people of Iraq. They really do need to learn the difference between these two sets of people. The only ones that DO NOT want us there are the terorrists that still have their agenda to push for control over the people. HHhhmmmmm, Sounds like the liberals a bit now doesn't it? Well, at least we know 'why' they defend those violent, destructive and manipulative group- I gues birds of a feather....
