As the owner of a web site, you most likely understand the importance of having interesting and relevant content on your web site. Not only does this make your web site more appealing to your human visitors, it can also give your site a boost in the search engine rankings. Since the majority of web surfers find their web sites by completing keyword searches rather than by typing in the address directly, maintaining a top ten ranking in the search engine results is essential to your web site's success.

One way to add content to your web site is through the use of article directories. Article directories are web sites containing hundreds of articles that have been written by dozens of different authors. These directories are usually divided into several categories as well as numerous categories within these categories. As such, it is very easy to navigate through an article directory in order to find an article that is relevant to the topic you desire.

Although using an article directory is free, there are a few pros and cons that you should keep in mind before deciding to use one of these articles on your site.

Pro: It's Easy and It's Free

The most obvious pro to using articles from an article directory is the fact that it is easy and it is free. If you have just launched a site and you are looking to throw some content onto it as you build it, the articles from an article directory are perfect for this purpose.

Con: Search Engines Don't Like Copied Content

Although no one fully understands the complex algorithms used by search engines when determining the ranking of a web site, one thing is known: search engines are not found of duplicate content. Therefore, since the content you borrowed from the article directory is already listed on the article directory and possibly on other sites as well, your content will be looked upon as duplicate content. This may hurt a bit when it comes to your search engine rankings.

Pro: The Articles are Often Keyword Centered
