Over the past 2 decades I have worked in a variety of different jobs, ranging from babysitting to managing a home health care agency, and everything in between. I dabbled in retail, customer service, optical, advertising, education, and the medical field. Currently I am still working in the medical field and I do thoroughly enjoy it and I see it as a field that offers a lot of opportunities for advancement and additional training. But yet, there still seems to be something missing for me. I have long entertained the idea of starting my own business and I still cherish that as something I would like to do someday. But, when is someday? That is truly the question.
I can honestly say, I wish I had known then what I know now in my quest for employment and pursuing my educational goals. If I had first hand experience in the medical field prior to choosing my area of study I would have gone more in the direction of the medical field. Most of my experience has been working experience and my educational background and been a minimal advantage in my prior employment.
I have read and reread books and magazine articles about starting businesses and business ideas and the same ideas seem to play out over and over again with minimal actual information about starting the business. The thought of giving up a steady paycheck and the security of a full time job terrifies me, which I see as a true hinderance on my pursuit for the right opportunity to job into a business of my own. Although, security is only relative, is it not? In today's economy, one has to truly wonder how secure anyone's job really is? However, knowing that the market is what it is and jobs are hard to come by, the notion of having to start searching for a new job in an already difficult market, should your venture fail, is very difficult to swallow. At least it is for me.
