I joined Associated Content in April 2005; however, it took an entire year before I became brave enough to publish my first article. I remember reading the abundance of articles published throughout AC. As one who had no formal training in writing and nearly flunked out of high school, I was extremely intimidated by the quality of writing published at Associated Content.

Nearly two years later, I still find it challenging to push the "Publish" button. There's so much to think about. Is the keyword density at the proper percentage? Are my SEO techniques up to par? Have I utilized LSI properly? Is every word spelled correctly? Am I using proper grammar?

As I continue my quest to improve my writing skills and submit content which appeals to AC's audience, I utilize the "My Content" tab frequently to review what people are reading and which articles are ignored. I'm frequently amazed at the page view counts, or lack thereof.

This past week, I created a spreadsheet to help me better track popular and not-so-popular content. The following is a synopsis of my five best and worst performing articles published on Associated Content. Although I'm still not certain how to determine if an article will be well-received, I did find the results quite intriguing.

Kathy Browning's Five Worst AC Performers:

My first AC article, "Essential Oils and Feng Shui", was published on April 6, 2006. As one who practices holistic health and feng shui, I KNEW people would flock by the thousands to read my informative and well-researched article. Was I ever wrong! To date, this article has only been viewed 191 times. After reviewing the article, I can see that it's not very beneficial to people unless they have an understanding of feng shui. It's a little too technical and the formatting isn't all that great. However, I still think it's pretty darn good for my first attempt!

Sometimes I can guess which articles will be popular. Other times I am shocked. Maybe I should do a spreadsheet, too and see if I can figure this thing out a bit better. Thanks.

Great idea . . . revisiting your own published work. It's helpful to evaluate periodically, I think. Thanks for sharing your insights. ;-)

I'm coming back to check the comments. I have to say that the articles that did best for me were often on what I'd call "routine" topics and there is not always a connection between the articles people here loved and those that got the most page views. I thought I'd share that in case it was educational or informative. I'm still learning....

On my way over to the deep fried pickle recipe. LOL I know what you mean though, my VERY fatning recipe for Southern Mississippi Chicken and Dumplings has the most page hits! I've also gotten the most private messages on that one thanking me for the recipe after they tried it. Too funny huh? Ok, gotta go.....I LOVE deep fried pickles!

I'm looking at your pickle article. Also, Tumeric has cancer preventing properties in it. I love this article because it is the fastest way to get to know you as an AC CP.
