Choosing a prom date is something many high school seniors begin to obsess over from the beginning of the school year. For students who have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend, they can be secure in the fact that they have a prom date, for the most part. For those who stay single the entire year, or have last minute breakups, choosing a prom date can be both exciting and terrifying at the same time.

Most people hope to go to the prom with the person they have secretly had a crush on all year. But if a relationship is not struck by prom time, the chances of such a date is slim. For those who do get to go to the prom with the person who sends their heart a flutter, their prom may turn out to be a bad experience.

Prom night is no time for a nervous first date. The prom is much more about celebrating the end of your high school experience, then having a first kiss with someone new. Your prom date needs to be someone with whom you are very comfortable. So if you don't have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend to go to the prom with, you need to choose your date carefully.

Go with a close friend from your class. Going to a prom with a good friend of the opposite sex is always a good idea. There will be no jealousy if one of you dances with someone else too many times, and you will also both be free to play the field is you so wish.

Invite a your on again, off again friend. If you have someone you dated in the past, but are not too serious about, and the feeling is mutual, then you may want to consider inviting them to the prom. You can have a fun evening together with no expectation afterward.

Invite a family friend. Choose someone both you and your parents feel comfortable. For girls, choosing a male family friend will put your parents at ease and cause them to worry less. For guys, choosing someone you have known for many years, but your classmates do not know will make you the center of attention… in a positive way.

Have a back-up plan. If your efforts to get a prom date falls through, have back up plans with a bunch of kids who want to go solo to join their group. You may be surprised at how much fun you will have without a prom date.
