Different breeds of cats have different personalities. When you choose a kitten for your family, you'll want to take that into account. Do you need a cat that gets along well with other cats? Do you need a cat that gets along well with children? Can you have a cat that needs lots of attention, or do you need a cat that is more independent in nature?

Here is a list of common cat breeds and some information about their personalities and needs, to help you choose the right breed for you and your family.

Abyssinian- This cat likes to be around people, but is not considered a "lap cat."

American Bobtail- This cat is very affectionate and likes to be held.

Birman- This is an active, playful cat, who can be independent and is a good choice for a busy owner.

Bombay- This cat gets along well with dogs and other pets, and is also good with children. It is known as a "lap cat."

Burmese- This cat gets along well with children, will tolerate dogs, and even likes riding in the car.

Cornish Rex- This cat is very affectionate. It is also very active and playful. It requires a fair amount of attention.

Japanese Bobtail- This cat adjusts well to dogs and other animals, and is especially good with children.

Korat- This cat does not like loud noises. It gets along well with other cats.

Maine Coon- This cat is very good with both children and with dogs.

Manx- This cat is considered a "one person cat," who tends to become very attached to just one person.

Ocicat- This cat gets along well with other cats and dogs. It requires a fair amount of attention.

Persian- This cat does not do well with children or in noisy households. It also requires daily grooming because of its very long, full coat.

Ragdoll- This is a very friendly cat who likes to sleep with people.

Scottish Fold- This cat does well with other animals and children.

Siamese- This is a very affectionate cat and is known as a "lap cat."

Singapura- This cat is a curious, playful cat, who is known to "get into things."

Somali- This is a very active cat that demands a lot of attention.

Tonkinese- This cat gets along with everyone. It is very curious and is known to "get into things."
