Hiking Safety
Getting out and about in the great outdoors doing a bit of hiking is a great activity to get into. There is nothing like getting away from it all, whether it is for a few hours or maybe a few days. Hiking does not come without it's dangers though and there are a few simple rules you
should follow to ensure your safety.
1. The Weather
You need to be prepared for all weather. You may start off from home in brilliant sunshine and warmth but the weather can change rapidly so you could end up in cold and rain or worse. It pays to be prepared. Always take a change of clothes with you and if the day is warm make sure you are carrying some warmer clothing in case the weather does turn nasty.
2. Don't hike alone
I don't recommend you go hiking alone. While it would be great if we lived in a safe society the reality is we don't. You never know who may be around so adopt the safety in numbers attitude. Also if you were to injure yourself having someone else with you means they can go and get help.
3. Inform others of your intentions
Make sure you let family, friends or the police know where you are going and what time you expect to be back. This way should you not return people know that you are potentially in danger and they also know where to go looking for you.
4. Take plenty of food and water
Make sure you take enough supply of food with you to last for at least a day or two longer than you intend to be out. If you do get lost or become trapped somewhere at least you have enough food to survive on.
5. Take a cell phone
Now days pretty much everyone should have a cell phone. Make sure you take yours with you when hiking. Sure there are still places where you may not be able to get a signal but in case you can get a signal, a cell phone is again very useful should you be in distress and need help.
6. Plan your trip
Don't go off randomly on a hike. Make sure you have researched where you are going so you have a clear idea of the area and the path you are going to follow.
7. Take a compass and a map
If you do happen to wander off course and get totally lost a compass and a map should help you to figure out exactly where you are and how to get out. Consider maybe taking a GPS device as well.
