Ask any local in Newport about the city-by-the-sea's spooky past and they will tell you tales of pirates whose spirits still haunt the city and of other ghosts, ghouls and legends that haunt the city's shadowy lanes. It's why Newport, known for its coastal beauty and majestic mansions, is also considered America's paranormal playground.

Rather than fear its gruesome past, Newport faces it straight on during the week leading to Halloween, and in particular, Halloween night. The tradition is called Haunted Newport, and the 2006 event begins October 21 and includes 11 days of Halloween activities that culminate on October 31.

Throughout various venues in Newport, lovers of the Halloween holiday can take part in ghost tours, Halloween parties, costume contests, a Jack-O-Lantern jog, Halloween at the vineyards, psychic fairs, a pirate walk, a Sea Witch Costume Ball, a Halloween treasure hunt, and so much more.

The fun kicks off October 21, 2006, with an Opening Day Ceremony, or shall we say, Scaremony, that features spooky stories, a kiddie costume contest, a Halloween market, an Old Town Ghost Walk, and much more. Then throughout the week, ghoulish events are held, including an interactive Murder Mystery performance at Astors' Beechwood Mansion, a Halloween labyrinth and a Horror Film Festival.

One event that provides a haunting good time is the Dead Pirates Walk. It's led by a costumed buccaneer who entertains with genuine pirate tales about Newport's notorious sea dogs and rum runners while touring Newport's historic waterfront and narrow streets. The Dead Pirates Walk departs from the Gateway Visitors Center, 23 America's Cup Avenue, Newport, on October 29, 2006. For a time schedule, call 800-459-4922. Admission is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for children under 12.

Does anyone know anything about a haunted jack-o-lantern walk in the newport area? There was one last year, but I can't remember where/when it was!
