What is it about a comfortable of shoes? Over the years I have had three fantastic pairs of comfortable shoes. Each one of them was special to me for different reasons, but all these had two things in common. They were comfortable and I refused to throw them away. Each and every pair of comfortable shoes I have worn until they literally were falling apart.

The first truly comfortable shoes that I recall having was my Converse basketball shoes that I got in seventh grade. They carried me through an entire basketball season, and then served as my school shoes throughout the rest of the year. At this point, they were in shreds and barely recognizable as footwear. Believe it or not these comfortable shoes were far from finished. They then moved from the front of my closet to the back porch. At my mom's insistence, they became my outside shoes. When you designate a teenagers shoes as "outside shoes", you may as well drop a bomb in them, so they met a very ugly end.

The next truly comfortable shoes that I recall was a pair of Topsiders that I bought in ninth grade. These were also the first shoes that I ever purchased for myself with my very own money. Maybe the mental aspect of having bought them myself played into the fact that I refused to throw them away. I wore them off and on for going on six years, despite the fact that my foot size and fashion trends had changed. Tight as they were, they were still unbelievably comfortable.

Now, as a writer, I enjoy the comforts of a wonderful pair of slippers that has been stationed under my desk for years now. They are ugly as sin, but when I slide my feet into them it is like sliding into a pair of clouds. It does not bother me that duct tape holds them together, or that they lost their color years ago. Occasionally, my wife will borrow them and not replace them under the computer desk. These are times of desperation. At three o'clock in the morning when you are trying to write without your foamy slippers happily enveloping your feet, your writing suffers.
