Jim Verraros, a contestant from American Idol Season 1, publicly announced that he was gay after the competition was over for him. He is now hoping that a gay contestant from this season wins the coveted title of American Idol.

Should our next American Idol be gay, is America ready for that? Of course the next Idol might be gay, or black, or Latino, or Martian. If that particular contestant can rack up enough votes, they don't even have to be the best singer. While American Idol started as "Pop Idol" in England, with the sole purpose of finding and producing undiscovered singing talent, we take talent shows much more personal in the U.S.

Simon Cowell best described the difference for me this season when one contestant made it to Hollywood and he told them to go out and celebrate with his friends who were waiting anxiously outside the door. When the shrieks and screams wafted into the judges' room, Simon remarked, "That's what I don't get about Americans!" Paula and Randy questioned him about this comment and Simon explained that if a friend of his called to tell him about something wonderful that had happened to them, he would say, "Good job." That's it, nothing for him to get excited about, it didn't happen to him. He explained that only in America do people get so involved with what happens to others (in the context of a contest, of course).

It will not matter if the next American Idol is gay, or blue for that matter, if they have a large enough fan base they will win. This is a big reason why the American Idol is not always the best singer in the competition, talk to Chris Daughtrey and other more talented singers than the winners of their season.

Clay Aiken was the runner-up to Rubin Studdard and was assumed to be gay. This was not the reason for Clay's second place win, Rubin had more supporters call in votes, it is as simple as that.

In conclusion, if you like an American Idol contestant, you had better phone in your vote. This is the only way that they can win, no matter why you vote for them.

Well, David Cook is 100% gay.. There's nothing wrong with him being gay.. but it just looks a little weird to see a gay man trying to be a rocker.

It should be based on talent, but i'm afraid to say it isn't really... They are based on popularity and that is a shame.

Good review.

I'd like to say that it should be based on talent, but it often is based on popularity. It really bothered me when reporters would not leave Clay alone about his sexuality. That is personal, and they were trying to force him to talk about it. It should be his decision. I was thinking about K. D. Lang (country singer) and how incredibly talented she is. Watch the video she did with Roy Orbison of "Crying". It is powerful. Sexual orientation should have nothing to do with evaluation of talent.

"It will not matter if the next American Idol is gay, or blue for that matter, if they have a large enough fan base they will win. This is a big reason why the American Idol is not always the best singer in the competition, talk to Chris Daughtrey and other more talented singers than the winners of their season." The above statement is self-contradictory. Chris Daughtry has/had a larger fan base, if you use his post-Idol album sales and concert revenues as a measure. So does Clay Aiken. The text & telephone voting systems Idol has in place are inherently flawed. In season 2 there was one phone line for each contestant and they were maxed out even in the week Kimberley Locke was eliminated. Remember how there was little variance between that top three? Because calls reached maximum capacity there was no way to know who was actually ahead. Then in the Ruben/Clay final, there were still just two lines which again, maxed out. It was a matter of text messages making the 1/2% difference

I don't remember Danny ever addressing his sexuality during his run on Idol. He DID say he was just being himself, which is commendable. I saw his Christmas Rant online, and it could well have damaged his chances as much as anything. Kind of sad because it seemed to me to be one of those adolescent-error-in-judgment things that many teens go through. His singing was good at times but inconsistent. Should he have made top twelve? Maybe, maybe not. He did seem to be a sensitive guy, but immature, IMO. I don't think he would have won in any case.

The biggest problem is our society's obsession with sex. It's time to grow up & get past that! What somebody does in their bedroom (or kitchen, or living room, or...) is private and should be kept between those consenting adults. Those who decide their sexual preferences define who they are, and take a public stand to 'represent' others with similar preferences, violate that privacy, and thus subject themselves to being judged by others. Those who keep their intimate lives private show respect for themselves and those involved in their lives. Many people don't shape their public persona around who & what they do sexually. Why should anyone be talking about that anyway? Is it part of his or her stage show? If he or she sings well and entertains their audience, isn't that what counts?

I'm kinda mad now that the people of America are still so IGNORANT about homosexuality that they couldn't get past this issue with Danny Noriega. I wanted to do this C4C but I realized after watching the results show tonight that I am too close to this issue. I found Danny on Myspace and sent him an encouraging message.

There's no doubt that Clay would have won season 2 if the voters could have gotten through to vote!!

there are so many talented gay singers... SO MANY! i think danny noriega is the only openly gay contestant this season... right? i think the kid is talented, but his earlier myspace video rants might have a negative effect on him. (he hasnt confirmed so far that he is gay on ai, but he has a video online where he drops the f*****-bomb describing himself and basically says yeah, im gay... so what. google danny noriega gay rap) :D great article. i agree... talent doesnt come measured in sexual orientation. if no idol winner so far has been gay, its because none of them have had the talent!!!

no doesn;t matter as long as they can see and will see records

I agree that sexual orientation should have no bearing on success. The one with the most votes wins.

Is America ready for it? Well, I'm not so sure. But if the person can sing, I don't think it matters one way or another.
