Is America ready for a gay American Idol this year? Former American Idol contestant, Jim Verarros thinks so. I would have to agree. Americans aren't as uptight with sexuality as they once were. People are being judged for who they are, in terms of character, more than ever. If a gay artist can display talent perseverance and a personality, why can't they be an idol?

Society still isn't completely tolerant. If there were to be a homosexual American idol winner, you would here an outcry from the public. Heck, they gave Fantasia a hard time for having a child out of wedlock. There are those who still have problems with homosexuality. Some still believe that homosexuality is morally wrong. That's their problem though. America is a very diverse nation and gays are a part of that A gay pop star or actor could easily fit into the mix.

Gay people are just like everybody else. There no reason why they can't be an idol to people across the world. An idol is someone who is looked up to and admired for their talents and character, and last time I checked, sexuality has nothing to do with either.

Might I add there have been questionable American Idol contestants before? Clay Aiken came in second place and he doesn't exactly fit the definition of masculinity. Many musicians and actors have experimented with sexuality in the public eye before. Having a gay American idol isn't exactly excepting gays though. That has to be made clear. Most people don't have a problem being entertained by gays. I mean let's face it; their influence on Hollywood is significant. At the end of the day, I think America is ready, but I'm not sure if the American Idol's audience is. It's one thing to be a gay pop artist; it's another to be an openly gay pop artist.

I think it is ridiculous to vote for someone just because they are gay. American Idol is suppose to be based on talent...now we are basing it on sexuality??? If you ask me, that is wrong and stupid. I do not care what orientation you are, I just care whether or not you can sing!

I'm completely aware of Clay's reported absence from the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. While it is peculiar, I choose to believe that the main agenda of the press is to create the conditions for another Clay Aiken scandal. Why Clay doesn't respond, who knows... He has said before that he picks & chooses his battles. I've got to hand it to him for being so adament about his private life. Unfortunately, by doing so the press thinks he's got something to hide. What we do know is that he's done a lot of good. And, if you're passionate about a cause you just don't suddenly stop. It's another "Let's Make A Mountain Out Of A Mole Hill" story involving Clay Aiken.

Is Clay gay? I don't know. I DO know that he says he is NOT gay, so that is enough for me. If he is indeed gay, shouldn't HE have the right when and if he should come out? I do understand how the gay community would LOVE if he were gay, as Clay Aiken is not only an amazing man, he has a great voice and a very bright futer ahead of him. Have you seen Spamaloy? The man is awesome. And Mike Nichols himself is begging Clay to extend his run.

"Clay's name is not brought up just to get Claymates to respond" - and yet, respond they do. "Speaking of Aiken, why can't the focus be on his humanitarian efforts?" - If Clay won't respond to questions about his humanitarian work, you have to place the blame on Clay, or were you not aware that he was contacted just last week about his work with the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, and refused to make any sort of statement about it. What's he hiding? "why is Clay Aiken's name always brought into the mix" - Why is that the only thing you are fixated on. The article was about Jim Verraros and the possibility of a gay American Idol. Clay Aiken, as a very sexually ambiguous alumnus of the show, (and really, anyone who comes out as asexual is just asking for speculation), is very much on topic in this regard. "Clay did NOT come in 2nd." - When you say something that is so easy to disprove, you are just making all of your arguments easy to ignore.

They use Clay's name not because he is gay, he isn't , but rather because they get hits for having it in the article.

First of all; Clay did NOT come in 2nd. He beat the living daylights out of Ruben. Clay was receiving 80 percent of the vote every single week he was on. Clay was never in the bottom 3, as Ruben was twice. Clay was receiving so many votes the final night that the one line and 2 hours of voting time could not handle them. He most likely beat Ruben by millions of votes. Two producers admitted Clay's numbers were 80 percent of the votes every week he was on. So...a lot of people loved Clay whether they thought (think) he is/was gay or not. Doesn't matter. The guy has more talent and humility in his little finger than all the contestants combined. And, Bob, Clay's name is not brought up just to get Claymates to respond; his name comes up because he is an UNFORGETTABLE person and talent. He is the one that is mentioned the most when American Idol is talked about. GAME OVER, IDOL FOUND!!

Speaking of Aiken, why can't the focus be on his humanitarian efforts? He created a foundation for children with disabilities, he's a UNICEF ambassador whose articulate, driven & compassionate. He's done so much good and he's not even 30 yet! The mainstream press is such a disgrace.

First of all, who cares what this mediocre at best former contestant wants and secondly, why is Clay Aiken's name always brought into the mix - just to get hits from the Claymates! I agree with Dan - just because the guy isn't macho how does that make him gay?

Leave Clay out of it. Just because he isn't a neanderthal doesn't mean he is gay. He has always said he isn't gay. Leave him alone!
