Boston is an incredible city blessed with romantic cobble stone streets, a vibrant downtown and some of the most prestigious universities in the world. But beyond all these qualities that make the city such a great place to live in and visit, Boston is also centrally located to much of the beauty of New England destinations...and the best part is, you are usually only a few hours away! Here are Boston day-trips that can serve you with a helping of history, nightlife and sea activities.

Portsmouth

For sheer convenience (it's only an hour's drive away) and fun, this seaside town in New Hampshire is probably my favorite Boston day trip. My idea of a really fun day in Portsmouth starts with driving into town mid-morning (parking can be a hassle later in the day) having brunch at Currents Bistro, followed by a stroll around Market Street, the heart of Portsmouth, and enjoying all the funky bookstores and antiques shops. Then head toward the harbor where you can see a lot of interesting activities- like tugboats, ships docking and loading-and if you are feeling adventurous, you can go fishing or whale watching or even take a short cruise. There's much more to do in Portsmouth, like visit the Strawberry Banke museum where you can watch as period actors re-enact life in the 19th century or you can take a guided tour of a 1950's submarine at the USS Albacore Museum. Plan your visit to Portsmouth with a visit to their tourism website.

Foxwoods Resort Casino

This resort is the largest casino IN THE WORLD. And, as you can imagine, it's impossible not to have a good time. Along with gambling, there are various great restaurants, including Al Dente which is an amazing Italian restaurant and there's also a Hard Rock Café which is always fun to visit. Foxwoods is less than two hours away from Boston which makes it an ideal day trip. Go to the Foxwoods website for a complete list of everything they have to offer.
