There is nothing better than stepping outside into the crisp, fresh air for a morning run. The birds are chirping, the sun is just peaking out over the horizon, and the rest of the world is still snuggled up under the covers. The clean breeze whips around waking up the senses. But before an invigorating morning run, there are a few important factors to keep in mind to keep a runner safe and protect his overall well-being. Nothing ensures a successful, gratifying morning run than being safe and prepared. Here a few tips to make every run safe and enjoyable:
1. Wear reflective clothing. At dusk of dawn, it doesn't matter. A driver won't see a runner until it's too late. Reflective apparel is what draws attention to a runner.
2. Don't wearheadphones. Some runners need to listen to music, but using headphones when running outside can be dangerous. If a runner is alone, specifically a woman, it is hard to hear anything or anybody in the area. It can make a woman runner vulnerable to an attacker. Also, a runner can't hear a car close by, and is at risk of being hit.
3. If possible, try to run with a partner. There's safety in twos. Safety not only from attacks, but if necessary a partner can call for help if there is a running related injury or illness. Simply, a runner isn't alone.
4. Always wear an identification tag. If a runner enjoys solo runs, this is an especially important tip. If something physically happened, there is important information readily available.
5. Always carry a cell phone. Injury, attacks, tiredness, change in weather ... help is only a phone call away with a cell phone at hand. But even running with a partner, it's still good to have a phone. If a runner suffers a severe injury, a partner can remain with that person while making sure help is on the way.
6. Carry mace. Runners can encounter many different scenarios. From dogs to dangerous people, mace is a quality mechanism to keep animals and people away.
