If you think a beautiful prom dress is out of your reach, and even a discount prom dress is not something you can afford, you may be able to get a free prom dress. Charities everywhere are now collecting prom dress donations and holding events where the dresses are given out to needy girls. In most cases, these dresses have been worn only once. Many of the dresses still have tags on them. Some of the charities also provide shoes, jewelry and wraps.

The following list gives a few of the events being held to provide free prom dresses for girls who can't afford them. If an event is not listed in your area that does not mean that such an event does not exist. To find a free prom dress event in your area you should let your guidance counselor know of your need, as well as church members, or other community leaders you might know. Most of these shows are my initiation, and the sponsors contact schools and community members to inform them of the events. Also, as your prom approaches, check Google periodically for "free prom dress" and "your city".

While this article lists events for 2008, keep in mind that many of these charities hold these events year after year with significant growth each consecutive year.

Here are some free prom dress events that are scheduled for this year:

In Arizona, the Tempe Community Council's Project is holding the Cinderella Affair where they will give prom dresses to needy high school students on March and 29 at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center at Rural Road and Southern Ave.

In California the Princess Project www.princessproject.org, will have dresses in good condition, either short or long, from sizes 0 to 24. They are still in the collection phase.

In Illinois Zengeler Cleaners stores in Lake and Cook counties are collecting prom dresses through the end of March for the Glass Slipper Project. Collections are being accepted until the end of March. A distribution event should follow.

Great info! Thanks for writing about this. I am long past prom age, but I have some beautiful evening wear separates that I will look to donate locally.
