The footbridge by the University of Nebraska at Omaha was the scene of an hour and a half of horns honking, people waving, and a multitude of signs against the war in Iraq held by people who came, stayed awhile and then left after showing their interest in peace. The estimate was that there had been 100 people there at one time or another for that hour and a half.
Each honking horn of the drivers underneath the footbridge was also an indication of the wish of the people of Omaha for an end to the war in Iraq. There were two signs placed on each side of the street that said, "Honk for Peace".
After the hour an a half of signs and horns, there was a rally in Memorial Park after the protest on the footbridge by 60th and Dodge. It included many fine speakers. One of the speakers talked about the moral cost of the war in Iraq. Another speaker mentioned how wide spread the peace movement currently is. An enthusiastic young woman spoke about her feeling about the war. There was also mention about the financial burden that had been placed on Omaha Nebraska for the Iraq War.
Stratcom, which is located at Offutt Air Force Base by Omaha Nebraska was mentioned by one of the speakers. Here is one news article by the Omaha World Herald about Stratcom.
Nebraskan's for Peace is hosting the Annual Space Organizing Conference that will take place in Omaha Nebraska from April 11 to April 13. This will start with a rally at Offutt Air Force Base on Friday afternoon from 4p.m. to 5p.m. This conference should look at some of the issues brought up by one of the speakers at the Iraq War protest on March 19.
The protest of the Iraq War in Omaha Nebraska is significant due to the fact that it is considered to be part of a politically "red" state and is also so near Offutt Air Force Base and Stratcom.
