Be On Time
There is nothing like a first impression. This is your change to make the remainder of your stay at this assignment wonderful, or start it off on the wrong foot. One of the best ways to get the day started off right is to get to the assignment on time. Remember, that most temps are needed because someone is out for a period of time, or there is an important job to be done. That means that the folks in the office just may be a little stressed out. Keep that in mind when you are going to the offices.
Get to the office 15 minutes before you are scheduled to start working. This will give you time to get settled once you get to the office, or give you extra cushion if you get lost. It'll also give you time for a small coffee break if the location has a kitchen available.
Remember the Basic Skills
Even though different assignments will have different tasks that need to be accomplished, there are certain skills that will make sure that you are a successful temp. These skills will be useful and more than likely necessary in the vast majority of the positions you'll work in. Here are some of the most important skills you'll need to master:
Basic phone knowledge (how to answer them professionally, how to transfer to various extensions)
Basic Microsoft Office skills (Word, Outlook, Excel)
How to use a fax and/or copier
Very basic math skills (adding, subtracting, etc.)
Filing skills
If you become proficient at these few, easy skills, you'll rise to the top of the game in temping. You'll possess the skills that will make you a hot commodity.
