Some people hate having to decorate cakes or cupcakes, I look at it as therapy. Wilton has created something that will change the way you think of cake decorating. Their Color Mist line is an easy and quick way to spray on color to just about any food item. You can use it on cakes, whipped topping, cupcakes, sandwiches and just about anything else. The only thing you shouldn't use this on is cookies with a royal icing; since the outer layer is hard it locks out the ability for the Color Mist to adhere to it. Essentially you will end up with a smeared cookie. Wilton had another similar product that was an icing in a can and it was a bit hard to use, this is so simple that a kid could use it and get great results. Just remove the top, aim where you want the color and spray it on. If you have never used a product like this you might want to try it out on some parchment paper or cardboard so you can see the spray pattern and how close or far away you will need to hold it to determine the hue. This is a lot easier than having to whip up individual batches of colored frosting for cakes and can add a lot of variety to cupcakes.
You can get this in eight colors and if you want you can layer them but this will take some practice to get it to look 'right'. The one and a half ounce can is more than enough to do a large sheet cake and 72 cupcakes so you are definitely getting a lot for the suggested retail price $2.99. The cans have a long shelf life so even if you only use them a few times a month they are not going to spoil or need to be replaced like cans of frosting. I am anxiously awaiting Wilton's updated catalog to see if they have added a multi pack of Color Mist products. While it isn't hard to find the individual colors it would be nice to buy then in asset.
